Argos rewards the traveller who doesn't wait for a bus. Rent a scooter here and you can climb to Larissa Castle in the morning for views over the whole Argolic plain, then be sipping coffee by the springs at Kefalari before lunch. The ancient theatre sits right at the edge of town, so your ride can start with a five-minute stop before the roads open up into the countryside.

What makes Argos genuinely suited to two wheels is the geography of the Argolid itself: Mycenae, Nafplio, Epidaurus and Nemea are all scattered 10–35 km apart, connected by quiet, winding roads that public buses barely touch and taxis make expensive fast. A scooter rental in Argos lets you string these sites together in a single day, pulling over whenever a viewpoint, a spring or a taverna catches your eye. The town centre itself is flat and easy going; only the last stretch up to the castle gets steep.

Top 10 things to see in Argos by scooter

  1. Larissa Castle (Kastro tis Larisas) — a Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman hilltop fortress with panoramic views over the Argolic plain, reached by a short, steep climb from town.
  2. Ancient Theatre of Argos — one of the largest ancient theatres in Greece, right at the edge of the modern town and an easy first stop.
  3. Archaeological Museum of Argos — a compact museum of finds from the ancient city, good for getting your bearings before heading further out.
  4. Kefalari Springs — a natural spring at the foot of Mount Chaon with a rock-cut chapel and a shaded taverna, a scenic short ride from Argos.
  5. Ancient Lerna (Lerna Springs) — site of the mythical Lernaean Hydra and the Bronze Age "House of the Tiles," a quiet detour across the coastal plain.
  6. Mycenae (Mykines) — the UNESCO-listed Bronze Age citadel with the Lion Gate and the Tomb of Agamemnon, the region's headline site, just a short ride north.
  7. Nafplio Old Town & Palamidi Fortress — Greece's first modern capital, with Venetian streets, waterfront cafes and a climb up to Palamidi for sweeping views of the gulf.
  8. Tolo Beach — a popular sandy beach near Nafplio, an easy coastal ride with swimming and seafood tavernas waiting at the end.
  9. Ancient Epidaurus Theatre — the best-preserved ancient theatre in Greece, famous for its acoustics, worth the longer scenic ride through the Argolid hills.
  10. Ancient Nemea — the Sanctuary of Zeus, an ancient stadium and a museum, set among the vineyards of the Nemea wine region.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Argos?

For a 50cc moped you need at least an AM category licence; anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category, A1, A2 or A — a car licence alone won't cover you. The minimum age is generally 16 for AM mopeds and 18 for the motorcycle categories, though many rental companies set their own higher minimum and may ask for a minimum time holding the licence. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the individual operator.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Argos?

A basic 50cc scooter runs roughly EUR 5–15 per day in low season and EUR 20–35 per day in high season, while a 125cc–300cc scooter or automatic costs around EUR 30–50 per day.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring, peaking in July and August.
  • They drop back down from November through March, the cheapest stretch of the year.

When to book a rental scooter in Argos?

High season runs July to August, when prices are at their peak and popular models can sell out, so it pays to book ahead. Low season, November to March, brings the cheapest rates, though some local operators scale back their fleet over winter. May, June, September and October sit comfortably in between — good weather, thinner crowds and fairer prices, making them the sweet spot for exploring the Argolid at your own pace.

Local traffic rules in Argos

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and the police do enforce it. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open roads that link Argos to Mycenae, Nafplio and Nemea. The blood-alcohol limit sits at 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but motorcyclists and newly licensed riders are held to a stricter 0.2 g/l. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and stay on paved roads — insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beach riding.
