Serifos rewards anyone willing to leave the port on two wheels. Wind up out of Livadi and within minutes you are climbing toward Chora, the whitewashed hilltop town crowned by the ruins of a Venetian kastro, with the Aegean spreading out behind every switchback. Drop back down and the coast road opens onto Psili Ammos Beach, arguably the island's best stretch of sand, or the quieter cove at Ganema a little further along. This is a place made for a scooter, not a bus timetable.
Serifos is small and mountainous, with narrow, winding roads and only a couple of bus routes that barely touch the interior. A scooter is nimble enough for Chora's tight lanes yet comfortable on the hillier stretches toward the south coast, and since you can drive the island end to end in under an hour, nowhere ever feels out of reach. Traffic is minimal outside August, so exploring at your own pace is genuinely relaxing rather than stressful.
For mopeds up to 50cc you need at least a category AM licence; for anything 125cc and above you'll need the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) — a standard car licence isn't accepted on its own in Greece. The minimum age is generally 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for larger bikes, though rental shops often set their own higher minimum. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and vehicle.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're looking at roughly 5-10 EUR per day, rising to 15-25 EUR per day in high season, while larger or newer 125cc+ scooters and quads run 25-35 EUR per day.
July and August are Serifos's high season — book ahead, as scooters sell out and prices climb. Many rental shops close entirely from November to March, so if you're travelling in the off-season, check availability before you arrive. May, June, September and October hit the sweet spot: lower prices, comfortable riding temperatures and plenty of scooters to choose from.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers, and enforcement is strict with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, though island routes rarely let you go that fast anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists and new licence holders. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers unpaved roads or dirt tracks, so stick to the tarmac and always carry your licence, IDP and rental papers while riding.
