Agios Dimitrios is not the kind of place you explore by standing still. The village clings to a forested ridge of Pelion, and the roads dropping away from it wind toward the sea at Agios Ioannis and further along to Damouchari, the little harbor where Mamma Mia! was filmed. You can rent a scooter in Agios Dimitrios and be swimming at a pebble cove within fifteen minutes, then climbing back into the hills for a coffee in a stone-built square before lunch. It is the kind of freedom a bus timetable simply cannot give you.
This is mountain terrain built for two wheels, not four. The lanes linking Agios Dimitrios to its beaches and neighboring villages are narrow, twisty and short on parking, especially near the coast in summer. A rental car struggles to squeeze into a spot at Mylopotamos or Fakistra on a busy August afternoon; a scooter just tucks in. Distances are small — most sights nearby are a five-to-twenty-minute ride apart — but the switchbacks make every trip feel more like touring than commuting, which is exactly the point.
For mopeds up to 50cc, an AM category licence is enough, and the minimum age is 16. Anything from 125cc upward requires a proper motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) matched to the bike's power — a car licence will not cover you here. Rental companies in Greece often set their own minimum age above the legal one and may ask for a minimum licence-holding period, so check when booking. If you hold a non-EU licence, bring an International Driving Permit. A deposit is standard, usually a credit-card hold, with the amount set by the individual operator.
Expect around EUR 5–10 per day in low season, and EUR 15–25 per day in high season for a standard scooter; premium models run EUR 25–35 per day.
July and August are the busiest and priciest months on the Pelion coast, with scooters selling out and midday heat that makes gear uncomfortable. May, June, September and October offer the best mix of good weather, thinner crowds and lower daily rates — booking a week or two ahead is usually enough then. Outside those months, from roughly November to March, availability drops sharply as many shops shut for the winter, so it is worth confirming a rental is actually open before you travel.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with real fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in villages, 90 km/h on open country roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though the winding lanes around Agios Dimitrios rarely let you approach those numbers anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a tighter 0.2 g/l applies to anyone riding a motorcycle or scooter, so it is safest to treat riding and drinking as mutually exclusive. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and remember that leaving paved roads — tempting as some tracks look — typically voids your insurance entirely.
