There is something quietly perfect about a small island where the biggest decision of the day is which beach to ride to next. On Lipsi, the harbour at Chora is where every trip starts and ends — tavernas along the water, fishing boats bobbing at the quay — and from there a scooter opens up the rest of the island in a way walking simply can't. Ride out to Platys Gialos Beach for a proper swim, or duck under the tamarisk trees at Katsadia Beach for lunch, and you'll already understand why so many visitors decide to rent a scooter in Lipsi before they've even unpacked.
Lipsi is tiny, and that's exactly what makes it such easy riding. Roads are narrow and quiet, distances between villages and beaches are short, and traffic is close to nonexistent outside the busiest weeks of summer. Locals get around on two wheels for good reason: a scooter reaches the coves and chapels scattered around the coastline that no bus or footpath connects, while never asking you to fight for road space. A scooter rental in Lipsi turns a compact island into a full day's adventure.
For a scooter up to 50cc you need at least an AM category licence, and the minimum age is generally 16, though most rental shops set their own minimum a little higher. Larger scooters from 125cc up require a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence is not accepted as a substitute in Greece. If you're a non-EU visitor, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount set by the individual rental company.
Prices swing a lot with the season on an island this small.
July and August are Lipsi's high season — the island fills up, prices climb, and the handful of local scooters can sell out, so book ahead if you're travelling then. April-May and September-October are the sweet spot: milder weather, thinner crowds and lower prices. Winter (November-March) is the true low season, but many rental shops shut down entirely, so availability matters more than price at that time of year.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and it's an easy rule to skip on a laid-back island — don't, as fines are substantial. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though on Lipsi's narrow lanes you'll rarely want to go that fast anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists and new licence holders, so it's simplest to save the wine for after you've parked. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads — insurance typically excludes dirt tracks and beaches entirely.
