Andros rewards anyone willing to leave the ferry port behind and go looking. Park the bus schedule and pick up a scooter instead: you can wind along the coast from Gavrio to the harbour town of Batsi, then climb into Chora for an evening walk out to the Tourlitis Lighthouse, all in the space of an afternoon. The island rewards curiosity — half its best spots sit down a single-lane road that a bus will never take you.

Andros is big for a Cycladic island, and mountainous, which means the villages are too far apart to walk between but the roads connecting them are too narrow and twisty for most cars to enjoy. A scooter is the natural fit: light enough for the hairpins up to Panachrantou Monastery, nimble enough for the lanes through Menites, and cheap enough on fuel that detours cost you nothing but time. Outside July and August traffic is genuinely light, so if you want to rent a scooter in Andros, you'll have most of these roads to yourself.

Top 10 things to see in Andros by scooter

  1. Chora (Andros Town) — neoclassical mansions, Riva Square, the Unknown Sailor statue and a ruined Venetian castle make this the natural start and end point of any ride.
  2. Tourlitis Lighthouse — an iconic lighthouse perched on a rock off Chora's headland, an easy walk from the waterfront.
  3. Batsi — the island's main resort village, with a harbour, beach promenade and tavernas, reached by an easy coastal ride from Gavrio or Chora.
  4. Gavrio — the west-coast ferry port and a natural starting or refuelling point for routes around the island.
  5. Agios Petros Tower — a well-preserved circular Hellenistic tower near Batsi, one of Andros's oldest monuments and an easy detour.
  6. Panachrantou Monastery — a 10th-century monastery set dramatically on Mount Petalo, reached via a winding mountain road with sweeping valley views.
  7. Menites village and springs — a lush hillside village with spring fountains shaped like lion heads, a shady, cooler stop inland from Chora.
  8. Apikia — a mountain village famous as the source of Sariza mineral water, with stone houses and a scenic uphill route from Chora.
  9. Achla Beach — a remote, dramatic pebble beach reached via a dirt track through a gorge, a rewarding ride for confident riders.
  10. Korthi Bay area beaches — quieter sands on the island's southeast coast, reached by a longer scenic ride across the interior.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Andros?

For a 50cc moped you need at least a category AM licence and to be 16 or over; anything 125cc and up requires a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone won't cover you here. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount set by the rental company.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Andros?

Prices swing a lot with the season. A basic 50cc runs roughly 5-9 EUR a day in the shoulder months, while in peak summer a similar scooter costs 18-28 EUR a day, and larger 125cc-250cc models or ATVs can reach 25-40 EUR or more.

  • Cheapest around April-May and October, when demand is low.
  • Priciest in July and August, when fleets also sell out fastest.

When to book a rental scooter in Andros?

High season runs July through August, when prices peak and scooters get booked out early — reserve well ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when many island rental shops close altogether. The sweet spot is May-June or September-October: quieter roads, milder weather and lower prices, so booking a few days ahead is usually enough.

Local traffic rules in Andros

Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger — enforcement is strict and fines aren't small. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Andros's mountain lanes rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to skip the wine at lunch if you're riding back. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers unpaved roads, so treat routes like Achla's dirt track as walk-only once the tarmac ends.
