Corinth doesn't get the postcard fame of Athens or Santorini, and that's exactly the point. Rent a scooter and within minutes you're standing on the bridge over the Corinth Canal, watching a narrow slice of turquoise water cut clean through rock nearly a hundred metres below. Ride on and the road climbs toward Acrocorinth, the fortress-topped hill above the ancient city, where the switchbacks alone are worth the trip and the summit hands you the Corinthian and Saronic Gulfs in one sweep. This is a place built for two wheels, not a coach tour.
The sights around Corinth are spread across a landscape that's compact on a map but awkward on foot: ancient ruins here, a fortress there, ports and beaches strung along two different coastlines. Walking is too slow, a car feels heavy-handed on the narrow lanes threading through Ancient Corinth, and parking near the ruins is a hassle you don't need. A scooter closes that gap. It handles the hairpins up to Acrocorinth without breaking a sweat, slips through tight village streets, and lets you string canal, coast and hilltop into a single loop, stopping wherever the view asks you to.
For a 50cc moped you'll need at least a category AM licence and to be 16 or older; anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A), and a car licence won't cover you here. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental shops will ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, and many set their own minimum age above the legal one, so it's worth checking when you book.
Expect roughly EUR 5–8 per day for a basic 50cc scooter in low season, rising to EUR 15–25 in high season. Larger automatic or 125cc-plus models run about EUR 25–40 a day.
July and August are Corinth's high season — hot, busy and the priciest months to ride, so book ahead if you're travelling then. For lighter traffic, cooler temperatures and lower rates, aim for May, June, September or October. Winter (November to March) is quietest and cheapest of all, though fewer shops may be open.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and police do enforce it, with fines that sting. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on the open road and up to 130 km/h on motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to a strict 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to skip the ouzo before you ride. Keep to paved roads — rental insurance typically excludes dirt tracks and beaches entirely.
