Kea keeps a low profile compared to its Cycladic neighbours, and that's exactly the appeal. Hop on a scooter in Korissia and within twenty minutes you can be winding up to Ioulida, the island's car-free hilltop capital, or following the coast road toward the quiet bay at Otzias. There's no crowd to fight for a parking spot and no ferry queue of day-trippers — just narrow lanes, whitewashed walls, and the Aegean opening up around every bend.

At just 19 km end to end, Kea is practically built for two wheels. The roads are narrow, hill towns like Ioulida barely have room for a car to turn around, and the beaches, villages and monasteries are spread out along the coast in a way that makes walking impractical and a rental car overkill. A scooter lets you cover the whole island in a day, park anywhere, and detour down a side lane the moment something catches your eye.

Top 10 things to see in Kea by scooter

  1. Ioulida (Chora) — the island's whitewashed hilltop capital, with car-free lanes and Cycladic architecture; the natural base for a scooter loop of the island.
  2. Lion of Kea (Leon tis Tzias) — an ancient carved stone lion just outside Ioulida, reached by a short ride and a short walk, and one of the island's oldest landmarks.
  3. Panagia Kastriani Monastery — a hilltop monastery on the east coast with sweeping Aegean views, at the end of a winding road riders love.
  4. Otzias — a quiet bay with a beach and waterside tavernas, linked to Ioulida by a scenic coastal road on the way to Kastriani.
  5. Vourkari — a picturesque fishing harbour lined with yachts and seafood tavernas, an easy ride from Korissia.
  6. Korissia — the island's main port town, with its own beach and the usual starting point for scooter rentals.
  7. Pisses Beach — one of Kea's longest sandy beaches, backed by a palm grove, along the west coast road.
  8. Gialiskari Beach — a secluded sandy cove reached via a rougher coastal stretch, worth the detour for riders who go past the main routes.
  9. Ancient Karthaia archaeological site — ruins of one of Kea's four ancient city-states in a remote ravine; ride to the trailhead near Stavroudaki, then walk down.
  10. Kastro of Ioulida — Venetian castle ruins built over the ancient acropolis, right above Chora and an easy stop while exploring the capital.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Kea?

For a 50cc scooter you'll need at least an AM category licence, and the minimum age is 16, though most rental shops set their own age minimums higher. Anything from 125cc up requires a full motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence doesn't count as a substitute in Greece. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and vehicle.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Kea?

A basic 50cc scooter runs 5-10 EUR per day in low season and 15-25 EUR per day in high season. Larger scooters (125cc and up) and ATVs or quads cost more, typically 20-35 EUR per day in peak months.

  • July and August are the priciest months, with demand at its highest.
  • November through March is cheapest, though far fewer shops stay open then.
  • April, May and October sit in between — good value with milder weather.

When to book a rental scooter in Kea?

High season runs July and August, when scooters get booked up fast and prices peak — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the best prices but limited shop availability. For the sweet spot of good weather and fewer crowds, aim for May, June, September or October.

Local traffic rules in Kea

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforce this strictly with real fines. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road — though on Kea's narrow, winding lanes you'll rarely get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to keep riding and drinking well apart. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost always excludes dirt tracks and beaches, so stick to the tarmac to stay covered.
