Kasos rarely makes it onto anyone's Greek island shortlist, which is exactly why it rewards the traveller who shows up with their own wheels. Pick up a scooter by the little harbor at Fry and within twenty minutes you can be swimming at Antiperatos, wandering the whitewashed lanes of Agia Marina, or standing among the ruins of an ancient capital with the sea spread out below you. This is an island that gives up its best moments to people who can just go, not people waiting on a bus that never comes.
Kasos is small enough — roughly 8 by 14 kilometres — that a basic scooter is genuinely all you need to see everything in a single day. There's no real bus network here and taxis are thin on the ground, so a scooter isn't a luxury, it's the practical way to reach beaches and the ancient site at Poli that you simply can't walk to from town. The roads connecting the villages are short, quiet and easy, which makes this a comfortable island for casual riders rather than one that demands serious biking experience. If you're weighing up whether to **rent a scooter in Kasos**, this is about as forgiving a place to start as Greece offers.
For mopeds up to 50cc, an AM category licence is enough, with a minimum age of 16. Anything larger than 50cc needs the matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A — and rental companies are required to check this against your licence. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring your International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the amount varying by operator and by vehicle.
Prices swing a lot across the year on an island this size.
July and August are the dearest months, when prices climb and the small fleet of scooters on the island can sell out fast, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November through March is the cheapest stretch, but many island rental shops close for the winter entirely. May, June, September and October hit the sweet spot — quieter roads, comfortable temperatures and prices well below peak.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement carries real fines, so don't skip it even for a five-minute hop into Fry. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Kasos's short village-to-village stretches rarely give you the chance to go that fast anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most riders, dropping to a stricter 0.2 g/l for novice riders in their first two years. Rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and off-road use, so keep to the tarmac, especially on rougher stretches like the road to Avlaki.
