Kozani rarely tops anyone's Greece itinerary, and that's exactly why it rewards you when you get here. This is saffron country — the fields around Krokos still produce the red threads that end up in kitchens across Europe — and the best way to take it in is on two wheels. Start at Plateia Nikis under the city's clock tower, then let the road pull you out toward Lake Polyfytos or the old mansions of Siatista. A scooter turns a scattered region into a single afternoon.
Kozani itself is compact and easygoing: light traffic, simple parking, and a historic Kastro quarter made for pottering around slowly. But the real reason to rent a scooter in Kozani is what lies just outside it. Lake Polyfytos, the Krokos fields, Aiani and Siatista sit 20 to 40 km out — too far to walk, awkward on the limited local bus network, and perfect on a scooter that lets you stop wherever the view asks you to.
For a 50cc moped you need at least an AM category licence and to be 16 or over; for anything from 125cc up you'll need a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) and to be at least 18. A standard car licence won't cover you on a scooter here, and if you're not from the EU you'll need to bring your International Driving Permit along with your licence. Rental shops in Kozani will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount depending on the vehicle and the operator.
A basic 50cc scooter runs roughly EUR 5–10 per day in low season and EUR 15–25 per day in high season. Step up to a 125cc or larger model and expect EUR 20–35 per day, more again at the height of summer.
July and August bring the highest prices and the tightest availability, so book ahead if you're travelling in peak summer. From November through February you'll find the lowest rates, though some shops trim their hours in this quieter stretch. For the sweet spot — comfortable temperatures, good light for photos at Ancient Aiani or around the lake, and prices well below the summer peak — aim for late spring or early autumn.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and the police do check. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though smaller-engine scooters will naturally sit well under that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and new licence holders, so it's simplest to treat any riding day as a no-alcohol day. Carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and stick to sealed roads — insurance won't cover you on dirt tracks or off-road detours, however tempting the shortcut to a viewpoint looks.
