Trikala doesn't feel like the rest of Greece — no crowded coastline, no ferry queues, just a flat, easy-going town with the Lithaios River running through its middle and the cliffs of Meteora rising a short ride away. Rent a scooter in Trikala and you can be weaving past the monasteries above Kastraki within half an hour, then back in town by evening for a coffee on the riverside promenade. It's the kind of place where two wheels turn a checklist of sights into an actual afternoon of riding.
The city itself is compact and light on traffic, so handling a scooter through its streets takes no getting used to. What makes Trikala especially well suited to a scooter rental in Trikala is what surrounds it: Meteora, the old bridge at Pyli, and mountain villages like Elati and Pertouli all sit somewhere between 15 and 40 kilometres out — too far to walk, awkward by bus, but perfectly comfortable on a scooter that lets you stop wherever the view demands it.
For a 50cc moped you'll need at least an AM category licence; anything 125cc and above requires a matching motorcycle licence (A1/A2/A) — a car licence alone won't cover you in Greece. The minimum age is 16 for AM, 18 for the motorcycle categories, though rental companies often set their own higher minimum and may ask for a minimum time holding your licence. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit. Expect a deposit on top of the rental price, usually held on a credit card.
A basic 50cc scooter runs from EUR 5-8 per day in low season up to EUR 12-20 per day in high season, while larger 125cc-150cc automatics or e-bikes go for EUR 20-30 per day.
High season runs July to August, when prices peak and scooters can sell out around Meteora — book ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, with the cheapest rates but a quieter, cooler town. May, June, September and October split the difference nicely: fewer crowds, mild weather, and prices well below the summer peak.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do enforce it. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though smaller-engine scooters won't get near that anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists — so it's best to skip the taverna wine before riding back. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers on you, and stick to paved roads: insurance typically won't cover you off-tarmac.
