Giannitsa doesn't announce itself the way Rome or Santorini do, and that's exactly the appeal. This is a working Macedonian market town on a wide, flat plain, close enough to Alexander the Great's birthplace that history is practically underfoot. You can rent a scooter in Giannitsa and be riding through the ruins of ancient Pella in under twenty minutes, or follow the quiet farm roads along the Loudias River with nothing but wetland birds for company. A scooter turns a sleepy stopover into a proper base for exploring central Macedonia.
The old town's streets are narrow and built for foot traffic more than cars, and the surrounding plain is famously flat — there isn't a hill in sight until you get near Vermio or Naoussa. That combination makes a scooter far more practical here than a car, and far faster than a bicycle once you start covering the distances to Pella, Vergina or Edessa. Public transport barely touches these sites, so scooter hire in Giannitsa is really the only way to see them on your own schedule.
For mopeds up to 50cc you need at least an AM category licence; anything 125cc and above requires the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone won't cover you here. Minimum age is generally 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though rental companies often set their own higher minimums. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit (IDP). Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the amount varying by operator and vehicle.
Average rental prices run from EUR 5–8 per day in low season up to EUR 12–20 per day in high season, with premium models reaching EUR 20–30 per day.
High season runs July–August, when prices climb and popular scooters can sell out, while low season stretches November–March with the best rates but fewer riding days that suit an open-air trip. For the sweet spot, aim for May–June or September–October — mild weather, manageable prices and quiet roads out to Pella and Vergina. Booking a week or two ahead during summer is a sensible habit.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers, and police enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads outside town. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and riders in their first two years on a licence — worth keeping in mind if you're planning a relaxed evening in town before your next ride out to the countryside.
