Ioannina is a mountain town wrapped around a lake, and the fastest way to feel at home in it is on two wheels. Ride the old town's cobbled lanes down to the water, cross by boat to the island for a look at the monasteries, then point the handlebars out toward Zagori, where stone villages and the Vikos Gorge sit waiting an hour away. It is the kind of place where a short ride can take you from a Byzantine fortress to a mountain pass with nothing but pine forest in between.
The old town itself is tight and busy — narrow streets, tourist crowds, and parking that is hard to find near the castle or the lakefront. A scooter slips through all of that and parks wherever you like. The real reason to rent here, though, is the region around it: Zagori's villages, the Vikos viewpoints, Dodona, Metsovo. These sit 20 to 60 km out on winding mountain roads that reward a scooter or small motorbike far more than a car or a pair of tired legs.
For a 50cc scooter you need at least a category AM licence and to be 16 or older; anything from 125cc up requires the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A), checked by the rental shop against the bike. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the operator.
A basic 50cc scooter runs 5-8 EUR a day in low season and 15-25 EUR in high season; step up to a 125cc or automatic premium model and peak-season prices sit around 25-40 EUR a day.
July and August are high season — the best bikes go early, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November through March is low season, with the lowest prices but many shops running reduced hours inland. May-June and September-October split the difference nicely: quieter roads, mild weather, and rates well below the summer peak.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger, and police enforce this strictly with real fines attached. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though mountain routes like Katara Pass rarely let you go that fast anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to skip the ouzo before you ride. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and remember that leaving the tarmac — dirt tracks, gravel shortcuts — usually voids your insurance.
