Kalymnos rewards anyone willing to leave the port on two wheels. Hop on a scooter in Pothia and within twenty minutes you can be sipping coffee at a waterside taverna in Emporios, or watching the light change over Telendos from the cafes of Myrties. The island's switchback roads, cut into cliffs and citrus valleys, are half the reason to visit — and a scooter is the only way to feel them properly, rather than glimpse them through a bus window.
Kalymnos is small, steep and stitched together by narrow coastal roads, which makes it ideal scooter territory. Buses run rarely and a car feels like overkill for an island where nowhere is more than twenty minutes from Pothia. On a scooter you can stop wherever a view or a beach catches your eye, squeeze into village parking a car never could, and take the hairpin bends above Myrties and Emporios at your own pace — which, for many visitors, climbers included, is the whole point of coming here.
For mopeds up to 50cc, you need at least a category AM licence, with a minimum age of 16; larger scooters from 125cc require the matching motorcycle category, A1, A2 or A. A standard car licence is not accepted as a substitute in Greece, and non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental shops will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and engine size.
Expect to pay roughly 5-8 EUR per day in low season and 10-15 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 15-20 EUR per day.
If you're travelling in July or August, book well ahead — scooters sell out fast and prices sit at their highest. Shoulder months like May, June, September and October bring milder weather, thinner crowds and easier last-minute bookings. Outside of that, from November through March, many rental shops reduce their offer or shut for the season, so it's worth checking availability before you plan a winter trip.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for going without one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, though the island's narrow, winding lanes rarely let you approach that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to treat any riding day as an alcohol-free one. Stick to paved roads, too — rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beaches.
