Paris rewards riders. Squeeze the throttle down the Champs-Élysées toward the Arc de Triomphe, circle its roundabout like every Parisian driver does on instinct, then peel off across the Pont Alexandre III with its gilded lamps and river views. On a motorcycle you catch these moments as they come, instead of watching them through a bus window.

The city itself pushes you toward two wheels. Traffic is dense, streets are narrow, and parking a car near the centre can eat half your afternoon. A motorcycle slips through the same gaps a Parisian delivery rider would use and parks in a fraction of the space, so the hop from the Champs-Élysées to Montmartre or down to the Seine bridges takes minutes, not the better part of an hour. When you want a change of pace, the roads loosen up fast at the Bois de Boulogne or Bois de Vincennes on the city's edges, both easy loops for an unhurried ride.

Top 10 things to see in Paris by motorcycle

  1. Arc de Triomphe & Champs-Élysées — the iconic ride down the avenue and around the roundabout, a rite of passage for riders in Paris.
  2. Place de la Concorde — the grand square linking the Champs-Élysées to the Tuileries, a great photo stop on two wheels.
  3. Trocadéro — the best viewpoint across the Seine to the Eiffel Tower, a short ride from the centre.
  4. Pont Alexandre III — the most ornate bridge in Paris, a scenic crossing over the Seine.
  5. Montmartre & Sacré-Cœur — a hilltop basilica with sweeping city views and winding cobbled streets that are fun to ride.
  6. Bois de Boulogne — a large park on the western edge with looping roads good for an easy cruise.
  7. Bois de Vincennes — a large park on the eastern edge, quieter roads and a lake loop.
  8. Canal Saint-Martin — a laid-back canalside route popular with locals, with cafés and locks along the way.
  9. Notre-Dame & Île de la Cité — the historic heart of Paris on the Seine, worth a slow ride through.
  10. Château de Vincennes — a medieval fortress at the edge of the city, an easy extended ride from the centre.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Paris?

For machines up to 125cc you'll need an A1 licence, or a full car licence held for at least two years plus a short mandatory course. Bigger motorcycles fall under A2 (from age 18) or full category A, generally reached after two years on A2. Rental companies in Paris commonly set their own minimum age, often 21 or higher for larger bikes. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held as a credit card pre-authorisation and refunded on undamaged return — the exact amount depends on the machine, so confirm it with the company when you book. If you're visiting from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Paris?

Average rental price runs 25-35 EUR per day in low season and 40-60 EUR during high season, with premium large-displacement models reaching 70-120 EUR per day.

  • Rates climb steadily from spring, peaking in June-August.
  • December-February is the cheapest stretch, with the widest availability.
  • Booking a few weeks ahead for summer secures the better machines before they sell out.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Paris?

High season runs June through August, with prices at their peak and popular models booking up fast. Low season stretches from November to March, when rates drop and the streets are noticeably quieter. If you can, May, June and September hit the sweet spot: mild weather, long daylight and rates well below the summer high.

Local traffic rules in Paris

France drives on the right. A helmet is compulsory for every rider and passenger on a motorised two-wheeler, and it must be ECE-approved with reflective stickers front, back and both sides — France also requires CE-approved gloves by law, so pack a pair. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day and night. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, rising to 80-90 km/h on rural roads outside town, and the blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to effectively zero for riders still in their first three years of licence. Central Paris also falls under a low-emission zone, so older two-wheelers may need a Crit'Air sticker to circulate on certain days.
