Motorcycling in Le Mans, France means riding somewhere the sound and smell of two wheels is practically part of the local identity. This is the town that gave the world the 24 Hours race, and standing at the edge of the Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans hits differently when you've arrived on a bike rather than stepped off a coach. Beyond the track, the Sarthe river valley opens up into a network of quiet D-roads leading to riverside abbeys, sleepy stone villages and one seriously handsome château — the kind of afternoon that a car simply can't deliver in the same way.

Le Mans rewards riders precisely because its real highlights sit just outside town. The medieval old quarter is compact and best explored on foot once you've parked up, but everything worth seeing beyond it — Sablé-sur-Sarthe, the abbey at Solesmes, Alençon's lace-making streets — lies 30 to 60 minutes away on winding countryside roads built for corners, not commuting. Park the bike in the centre, then let it earn its keep on the day-trips.

Top 10 things to see in Le Mans by motorcycle

  1. Circuit des 24 Heures du Mans & Musée des 24 Heures du Mans — the legendary endurance circuit and its motorsport museum, the single biggest reason a rider comes to Le Mans.
  2. Circuit Bugatti — the shorter permanent track within the same racing complex, home to track days and smaller events.
  3. Cité Plantagenêt (Vieux Mans) — a medieval old town with Gallo-Roman ramparts and cobbled streets, best seen on foot after parking up.
  4. Cathédrale Saint-Julien du Mans — a Gothic-Romanesque landmark overlooking the old town, a natural stop as you ride through the centre.
  5. Abbaye de l'Épau — a 13th-century Cistercian abbey just east of the city, an easy short ride out.
  6. Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Solesmes — a riverside Benedictine abbey on the Sarthe around 45 minutes north, a favourite scenic loop among local riders.
  7. Sablé-sur-Sarthe — a riverside town with its own château, a popular day-ride destination through the Sarthe valley.
  8. Château du Lude — a grand Loire-valley-style château on the Loir river, a classic countryside ride southwest of Le Mans.
  9. Alençon — a historic lace-making town about an hour northwest, reached on pleasant departmental roads.
  10. Vallée de la Sarthe — the winding riverside D-roads between Le Mans and Sablé, the kind of route that makes touring by motorcycle worth it over a car.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Le Mans?

Requirements depend on engine size. A 125cc machine calls for an A1 licence, or a category B car licence held for at least two years plus a mandatory 7-hour training course. Anything larger falls under category A2 (minimum age 18) or full category A, generally reached after two years on an A2 machine plus extra training. Rental agencies in Le Mans often set their own minimum age too, sometimes 21 or higher for bigger bikes. Expect to leave a security deposit, usually pre-authorised on a credit card and refunded on undamaged return — ask the operator for the exact figure and insurance excess before booking. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Le Mans?

Expect around 25-35 EUR per day in low season, rising to 45-70 EUR in high season. Race week can push rates even higher on what little availability remains. Larger-displacement or touring bikes typically run 60-90+ EUR per day.

  • Cheapest: November through March.
  • Most expensive: June, driven by the 24 Hours of Le Mans, followed by July and August summer holidays.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Le Mans?

If your trip lines up with race week in June, book as early as you can — good bikes and fair prices disappear fast around the 24 Hours. Outside that, July and August summer holidays form a secondary high season with noticeably higher rates. For the best combination of good weather and low prices, aim for May, June outside race week, or September, when the countryside roads are quieter and rentals cost less. The low season from November to March brings the cheapest rates of the year, though cooler, wetter weather makes it less ideal for touring the Sarthe valley.

Local traffic rules in Le Mans

France drives on the right. An ECE-approved helmet with four reflective stickers is compulsory for every rider and passenger on a motorised two-wheeler, and CE-approved gloves are a legal requirement too — France enforces this one, with fines and licence points for riders caught without. Dipped headlights stay on at all times, day and night. Speed limits are 80 km/h on two-way rural roads without a central barrier (check local signage, as some departments have restored 90 km/h), 110 km/h on dual carriageways, and 50 km/h through built-up areas from the town-name sign. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to a near-zero 0.2 g/l for riders in their first three years of licence. Keep a hi-vis vest on the bike to wear if you ever have to stop roadside in an emergency.
