Picture yourself pedaling out from beneath the towers of the Cathédrale Saint-Julien du Mans, freewheeling down into the cobbled lanes of the Cité Plantagenet before the day's heat sets in, then following the Sarthe out toward the countryside. Le Mans rewards exactly this kind of unhurried curiosity, and a bike is the easiest way to indulge it — you glide past half-timbered houses one minute and along open river paths the next, seeing far more than anyone limited to the tram lines ever will.
The old town here is compact and largely closed to cars, so a bike gets you across it in minutes while still leaving you free to dismount and wander the medieval streets on foot. Beyond the centre, flat greenways trace both the Sarthe and the Huisne, and a growing network of bike lanes makes longer rides — out to the famous racing circuit or the quiet abbey at Yvré-l'Évêque — comfortable without ever needing a car.
Renting a bicycle in France requires no licence at all. Rental companies generally ask the person signing the contract to be an adult, 18 or over, though children can happily ride equipment rented under a parent's agreement. A refundable deposit is standard, usually held on a credit card and released when the bike comes back undamaged — the exact amount depends on the model, so it's worth confirming with the rental company when you book. No International Driving Permit is needed for a bicycle.
Prices move quite a bit with the calendar. A standard city bike runs roughly 3–8 EUR per day in low season, rising to about 12–20 EUR per day in high season, while electric or premium models cost around 20–35 EUR per day.
If you're coming for the race weekend in June or travelling in July or August, book well ahead — this is high season, prices are at their peak, and the best bikes go quickly. For a quieter, cheaper trip, aim for November through February, when low season keeps rates down, though you'll want to check opening hours since some outlets scale back over winter.
France drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too. Cyclists under 12 are legally required to wear a helmet, though it's a sensible habit at any age, and riding with a reflective vest is required outside built-up areas at night or in poor visibility. Within town, general speed limits apply from the town-name sign onward at 50 km/h, so traffic sharing the road with cyclists tends to move at a manageable pace. If you're combining your trip with any motorised riding, note that France enforces a strict 0.5 g/l blood-alcohol limit, dropping to effectively zero for riders still in their first three years of licence.
