Picture gliding along La Croisette at your own pace, palm trees ticking by on one side and the bay glittering on the other, before turning uphill into the cobbled lanes of Le Suquet. That's the appeal of a bike rental in Cannes — you set the route, whether it's a lazy spin past the yachts at Port Canto or a quiet morning ride out to Plage de la Bocca before the beach fills up.
Cannes rewards two wheels precisely because it refuses to be one kind of city. The seafront is flat, wide and largely traffic-calmed, so cruising the Croisette end to end is effortless, while the old town and the villa-lined streets above Rue d'Antibes climb sharply enough that a car feels clumsy and parking becomes a headache. In peak season the centre clogs with slow-moving traffic, and a bicycle simply threads through it — getting you from the harbour to the beach to the hills faster than a car and further than your own feet.
No licence is required to hire a bicycle in France. Rental companies do normally ask the person signing the contract to be an adult, though children can ride equipment booked under a parent's agreement. By law, a helmet is compulsory only for riders and passengers under 12, though we always recommend wearing one regardless of age. Expect a refundable deposit, usually held by card pre-authorisation and released when the bike comes back undamaged — the exact amount depends on the model, so check it with your chosen operator when booking. No International Driving Permit is needed for a bicycle.
Average bike rental in Cannes runs 3–10 EUR per day in low season, rising to 15–25 EUR per day in high season. Electric or premium road and hybrid models cost more, typically 25–35 EUR per day.
High season runs June through August, peaking hard in July and August when the Cannes Lions crowd and summer holidaymakers fill the city — book ahead if you want a specific model. Low season stretches from November to March, with the calmest, cheapest riding in December and January. If you'd rather skip both extremes, late spring and September offer warm weather, thinner crowds and prices well below the midsummer peak.
France drives on the right, and cyclists share that same rule of the road. Helmets are legally required only for riders and passengers under 12, though wearing one is always a good idea on Cannes' hillier streets. Speed limits in built-up areas are 50 km/h, but as a cyclist you'll naturally sit well below that on most rides. The blood-alcohol limit for anyone on the road is 0.5 g/l, tightening to effectively zero for drivers within their first three years of holding a licence — worth remembering after a glass of rosé on the Croisette. Outside built-up areas at night or in poor visibility, cyclists are required to wear a reflective vest.
