Picture swapping the crowded Croisette pavement for the open road: the sun on the water, the Palais des Festivals behind you, and nothing between you and the hills but a throttle. Renting a quad-bike in Cannes turns a city built for red carpets and yacht-watching into your own private route, one that can take you from the harbor up into the pine-covered hills toward Grasse in a single afternoon. It's the kind of freedom you don't get standing in line for a bus.
Cannes rewards a vehicle like this precisely because it isn't just a beach town. The center is compact and often gridlocked in summer, but the terrain around it — steep lanes up to Le Suquet, winding coastal roads, backroads into the countryside — is far more fun to cover on four wheels built for it than squeezed into a rental car. A quad-bike lets you combine an hour in the old town with a full afternoon along the coast, without ever hunting for parking.
Quad-bikes on French public roads always require a licence — for the lighter models (up to 50cc) an AM category is enough, while heavier machines call for a B1 or full category B car licence, depending on the specific vehicle. Rental agencies will confirm which class your chosen model falls under. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held by credit card pre-authorisation and refunded when the quad comes back undamaged — the exact amount depends on the model, so confirm it with the rental company before booking.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're looking at roughly 15-30 EUR per day, while high season runs about 40-70 EUR per day. Larger or newer models can reach 70-120 EUR per day, especially around festival dates.
If you want the best rates and the easiest availability, aim for low season between November and March. High season — June through August, with July and August at their peak — brings warmer weather but also higher prices and machines that sell out fast, so book ahead if you're coming in summer or around the Film Festival in mid-May.
France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for anyone on a motorised vehicle, and CE-approved gloves are a legal requirement too — unusual outside France, but enforced with fines. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in town, dropping as you enter built-up areas, with higher limits on open roads outside the center. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, and if you're within your first three years of holding a licence, it effectively drops to zero. Keep dipped headlights on at all times, even in daylight, and carry a hi-vis vest in case you need to stop roadside.
