Picture yourself tearing along the coastal road out of Lecci, the Golfe de Porto-Vecchio glittering on one side and the scrubby maquis on the other, headed for a swim at **Plage de Santa Giulia** or the pine-fringed sands of **Plage de Palombaggia**. This corner of southern Corsica rewards travellers who can go where the tour buses can't, and a quad bike is built exactly for that kind of freedom.
Lecci sits a little inland from the gulf, and the roads linking it to the coast and the hills are a mix of good tarmac and looser, gravelly tracks that a scooter handles poorly and a rental car makes annoying to park at busy beaches in July. A quad's higher clearance and stable four-wheel footing take that friction away — you can nose into a sandy parking spot at Palombaggia, then head back up into the hills toward Col de Bavella without changing vehicles. It's the natural way to string together a full day of beaches, a fortified old town and a mountain pass without ever queuing for a bus.
On public roads in France, a licence is always required for a quad. Light models up to 50cc fall under the AM category, obtainable from age 14, while heavier quads need a B1 or full car (B) licence, depending on the machine — the rental company will confirm which applies to their fleet. Most operators set their own minimum age, commonly 18 or higher. A deposit is standard, usually held by card pre-authorisation and released on undamaged return; ask about the exact amount and insurance excess when booking. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence.
Rates swing a lot with the season. Expect roughly 15-30 EUR per day in low season, rising to about 50-90 EUR per day in high season, with larger-engine or two-seat models running 90-140 EUR per day.
High season runs June to August, peaking sharply in late July and August when France itself heads on holiday — Corsica's beaches and rental fleets book out well in advance, so reserve early if you're travelling then. Low season is November to March, when prices drop and choice narrows. For the best balance, aim for May, June or September: settled weather, open mountain passes and noticeably calmer roads than the summer crush.
France drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a quad, and CE-approved gloves are a legal requirement too — unusual outside France, but enforced with fines. Speed limits are generally 80 km/h on two-way rural roads without a central barrier and 50 km/h through built-up areas, so watch the signage as you pass through village centres near Porto-Vecchio. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, dropping to effectively zero for riders still in their first three years of holding a licence.
