Menton doesn't feel like a place to rush through in a car. The old town spills down toward the Vieux Port de Menton in tiers of pastel-coloured houses, and from there the Promenade du Soleil stretches out along the water, flat and unhurried, past pebble beaches and gelato stands. You can rent a bicycle in Menton on our website and ride that stretch at your own pace, stopping wherever the light looks good or the water looks inviting.
This is a compact town with a genuinely flat, walkable-by-bike seafront, which makes it an easy place to explore on two wheels rather than four. Parking is tight and the old town is largely closed to cars anyway, so a bike lets you glide past the queues. It also opens up trips that are short in distance but slow by bus — along the coast to Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, or over the border into Ventimiglia, Italy, for its Friday market. A **scooter rental in Menton** covers the same ground faster if you'd rather not pedal the hills inland.
No licence is needed to hire a bicycle — France doesn't require one for pedal bikes at any age. Rental companies do usually ask the person signing the contract to be an adult, 18 or over, though children can ride bikes booked under a parent's agreement. By law, anyone under 12 must wear a helmet, and most operators will offer one to riders of any age. Expect a small security deposit, typically held as a card pre-authorisation and released when the bike comes back undamaged. An IDP isn't required for a bicycle rental.
Prices swing a fair amount with the season. In low season a standard city bike runs around EUR 3–8 per day — our own listing at EUR 3/day sits right at that low end. In high season, expect roughly EUR 12–20/day for the same kind of bike. If you'd rather ride electric or take on the hills with a road bike, budget EUR 20–35/day, more again in peak summer.
High season runs June through August, sharpest in late July and all of August, with Easter and the May holiday weekends as smaller peaks — book ahead if you're coming then, since good bikes go fast. Low season is November to March, with quieter streets and the lowest prices of the year. If you want the best balance of warm weather and manageable prices, aim for May, June or September.
France drives on the right, and that applies to bikes too. Cyclists only need a helmet by law if they're under 12, though wearing one is sensible at any age. In town, expect a 50 km/h limit for motor traffic from the town-name sign onward, which keeps things relaxed for anyone sharing the road on a bike. Outside built-up areas at night or in poor visibility, cyclists are required to wear a reflective vest. Riding under the influence isn't treated lightly in France, so keep alcohol out of the equation if you're heading out on two wheels.
