Skyros doesn't feel like a place built for cars. It feels like a place built for wandering — winding roads dropping from the whitewashed lanes of Hora down to the long sweep of Magazia beach, then climbing again toward pine-shaded coves you'd never find on foot. A scooter turns the island into something you piece together yourself: breakfast above the Aegean at the Kastro, a swim at Pefkos by noon, sunset at a chapel most visitors never hear about.

The island's size and layout make it a natural fit for two wheels. There's one small town, a scatter of beaches and villages linked by lightly trafficked, paved-but-hilly roads, and distances that rarely stretch past 10–20km between highlights. Outside Hora, traffic is minimal and parking is a non-issue — you pull up wherever you like. A scooter handles the climbs to Atsitsa and Kalamitsa with ease, no car required, and lets you string together several beaches in a single afternoon.

Top 10 things to see in Skyros by scooter

  1. Hora (Skyros Town) & Kastro — the sugar-cube old town climbs to a Venetian-Byzantine fortress and the Monastery of Agios Georgios, with a steep final stretch rewarded by a 360° view over the Aegean.
  2. Magazia & Molos beach — the island's main sandy bay, over a kilometre long and lined with tavernas, sits right below Hora and makes an easy first ride.
  3. Pefkos beach — a pine-backed bay on the east coast, reachable only by road, with a taverna right on the sand — a classic half-day route.
  4. Agios Fokas — a quiet cove past Pefkos, popular as a scooter-and-swim stop away from the crowds.
  5. Atsitsa — a slower-paced pine-forest bay on the wilder northwest coast, worth the longer coastal ride for its clear water.
  6. Kalamitsa beach — a long stretch of sand and pebbles on the south coast, popular with windsurfers, near the Skyrian Horse Conservation Centre.
  7. Agios Panteleimonas Church viewpoint — a whitewashed chapel at the highest point of the Pefkos–Agios Fokas road, arguably the best sunset spot on the island.
  8. Linaria — the island's small port village, good for waterfront fish tavernas, an evening buzz when the ferry docks, and boat trips to nearby sea caves.
  9. Rupert Brooke's Grave — the WWI poet's secluded olive-grove gravesite in the south, a quiet detour that doubles as an excuse to explore the backroads.
  10. Palamari archaeological site — a Bronze Age fortified settlement in the north, an easy flat ride pairing ancient ruins with the coastline.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Skyros?

For a 50cc moped you'll need at least an AM-category licence; anything 125cc or larger requires the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) — a standard car licence isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece. The legal minimum age is 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though rental shops often set their own, higher minimum. If you hold a non-EU licence, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the individual operator.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Skyros?

Prices are quoted in EUR and swing a lot with the season:

  • Low season: around EUR 5–10 per day for a basic 50cc scooter.
  • High season: EUR 15–25 per day for the same basic 50cc, rising to EUR 20–35+ for larger scooters or motorcycles.
  • Bigger-cc scooters and motorcycles run EUR 30–45+ per day even at their cheapest.

When to book a rental scooter in Skyros?

July and August are the island's high season, when scooters get scarce and prices climb toward the top of that range — book ahead if you're travelling then. November through March counts as low season, with many island rental shops closing entirely, so it's not a realistic window for a rental. For the best balance of open shops, mild weather and lower prices, aim for May, June, September or October.

Local traffic rules in Skyros

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers, and enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Skyros's narrow, sometimes gravel-strewn lanes make those ceilings mostly theoretical. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers but a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to treat scooter riding and drinking as mutually exclusive. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and stick to paved roads — insurance almost always excludes beaches, dirt tracks and off-road riding.

Which insurance is provided with my rental scooter?

Usually basic third-party insurance is included in the rental price. If you wish to have more protection you can purchase additional CDW insurance, which limits your risk to the amount of your deposit. If you wish to rent a scooter without a deposit and with zero risk, you will need to add full insurance to your reservation.
