Skyros doesn't hand you its best bits from the ferry dock. You have to go looking for them, and a motorcycle is how you do it. Climb up to Skyros Town, where whitewashed Cycladic houses stack beneath a Byzantine kastro and the Aegean opens up in every direction, then follow the coast road down toward the pine-shaded cove at Atsitsa, or push all the way south to the quiet olive grove where the poet Rupert Brooke is buried. Rent a motorcycle in Skyros and the whole island — not just the parts near your hotel — becomes yours for the day.

The island's shape makes two wheels the obvious choice. A single main road splits a green, forested north from a bare, wind-scoured south, and a scooter or small motorcycle handles both halves with ease, without the parking headaches a car brings to Chora's narrow lanes. Outside Chora and the port at Linaria, traffic all but disappears, leaving you free to stop wherever a cove or viewpoint catches your eye.

Top 10 things to see in Skyros by motorcycle

  1. Skyros Town (Chora) & Kastro — a Cycladic hilltop village crowned by a Byzantine and Venetian fortress, with the island's best Aegean views.
  2. Rupert Brooke Memorial Statue — the bronze "Immortal Poetry" statue in Chora's main square, an easy stop on any ride up to the old town.
  3. Faltaits Museum — a folklore museum in a restored mansion, worth pairing with a wander through Chora's lanes.
  4. Rupert Brooke's Grave, Tris Boukes Bay — a remote olive grove at the island's quiet southern tip, a proper long ride and a fitting reward.
  5. Linaria — the ferry-port village with harborside tavernas, reached by a scenic coastal run from Chora.
  6. Molos Beach — sandy shoreline near Chora with old windmills and tamarisk trees, an easy first ride out of town.
  7. Kalamitsa Beach — a long sandy stretch near the airport, good for a relaxed coastal loop.
  8. Atsitsa Bay — a pine-backed cove on the wilder west coast, reached through Skyros's forested interior.
  9. Pefkos Beach — often called the prettiest cove on the island, at the end of a winding scenic road.
  10. Palamari Archaeological Site — Early Bronze Age ruins on the north coast, a good reason to explore the island's quieter end.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Skyros?

For a 50 cc moped, category AM covers you from age 16. Anything 125 cc and above needs a matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and a standard car licence won't be accepted in its place. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Riders are generally expected to be at least 18 for the larger categories, and rental shops usually hold a deposit, either as a credit-card hold or in cash, with the amount set by the individual operator.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Skyros?

Expect around 20–30 EUR per day for a basic 50–125cc scooter in low season, rising to 35–50 EUR in high season. Larger motorcycles or automatic scooters run 50–75 EUR per day.

  • Prices climb through July and August, the busiest and priciest months, when scooters can also sell out.
  • April, May and October offer the cheapest rates and the calmest roads.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Skyros?

High season runs July to August, when demand is at its peak and booking ahead really pays off. Low season stretches from November to March, though many island rental shops close for the winter entirely. For the best balance of good weather, open shops and fair prices, May, June, September and October are hard to beat.

Local traffic rules in Skyros

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with real fines behind it. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Skyros's narrow, winding routes rarely invite going that fast anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, tightened to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to treat riding and drinking as separate parts of the day. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and stick to paved roads — insurance typically excludes dirt tracks and beaches entirely.
