Katerini doesn't announce itself the way Athens or Santorini do, and that's exactly the point. Base yourself here on the Pieria coast and you're minutes from the Thermaic Gulf on one side and the pine-covered flanks of Mount Olympus on the other. Hop on a motorcycle and you can have breakfast by the sea at Paralia Katerinis, then be winding up toward the Olympus trailheads before lunch — a combination that's awkward by bus and unnecessarily boxed-in by car.
This is genuinely two-wheel country. The coast road is flat, wide and easy, so you can cover the distance between beach towns without effort, while the approach roads into Litochoro and up toward Prionia are narrow and twisty in a way that rewards a bike far more than a car. Parking is another quiet advantage: at a trailhead café or in a tiny mountain village square, you'll be tucking a bike into a spot a car could never use. It also makes half-day detours — a castle here, a stone village there — feel like nothing rather than a logistical decision.
The licence you need depends on the bike: mopeds up to 50cc call for at least an AM category, while anything 125cc and up needs the matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence won't cover you here. Minimum age is generally 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for the motorcycle categories, though rental companies often set their own, higher minimums. If you're coming from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the amount set by the individual rental company.
During low season you're looking at around 25-30 EUR per day, rising to 40-55 EUR per day in high season, and 45-70 EUR per day for a larger-cc scooter or motorcycle.
High season runs July through August, when prices peak and popular models sell out early, so if you're planning a summer trip, book a few weeks ahead. Low season sits in the cooler months, with the best value found in the shoulder periods of April-May and October, when the weather is still pleasant for riding but prices haven't climbed yet. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Katerini without competing for availability, aim for one of those shoulder months.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict, so don't skip one to save time. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though smaller-engine bikes are often capped lower. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to treat it as effectively zero. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads — insurance typically excludes beaches, dirt tracks and other off-road riding entirely.
