Argos rarely makes the postcard shortlist, but that is exactly its charm. Base yourself here and you can be climbing the switchbacks to Larissa Castle before breakfast, then rolling through olive groves toward Mycenae by mid-morning. A motorbike turns this corner of the Argolid into your own loop of hilltop ruins, quiet backroads and sudden sea views, on a schedule nobody else is keeping.

The Argolid was made for two wheels. Argos itself sits low and walkable, but everything worth reaching — Mycenae, Nafplio, Epidaurus — is scattered 12 to 30 km out along winding, lightly trafficked roads that a car handles clumsily and a taxi makes expensive. A bike also gets you up the hairpins to Larissa Castle and Palamidi Fortress, and along the coastal lane to Karathona, where parking a car is more trouble than it's worth.

Top 10 things to see in Argos by motorcycle

  1. Larissa Castle (Kastro tis Larisas) — a Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman hilltop fortress right above town, a short, steep ride up with sweeping views over the Argolic plain.
  2. Ancient Theatre of Argos — one of the largest ancient theatres in Greece, right in town, an easy first stop before longer routes.
  3. Heraion of Argos (Argive Heraion) — atmospheric, uncrowded sanctuary ruins a few km outside town, reached on quiet backroads.
  4. Mycenae, with its Lion Gate and Treasury of Atreus — a UNESCO Bronze Age citadel about 15 km away, the classic day trip from Argos.
  5. Nafplio Old Town — an elegant Venetian-era harbor town some 12 km away, a favourite for a coastal ride and waterfront stop.
  6. Palamidi Fortress in Nafplio — a massive hilltop fortress with a hairpin approach road and panoramic views over the Argolic Gulf.
  7. Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus — famed for its acoustics, about 30 km away via a scenic route through the hills, a favourite longer ride.
  8. Tolo Beach — a popular sandy beach town near Nafplio, a relaxed coastal ride with a swim at the end.
  9. Karathona Beach, just past Palamidi in Nafplio — quieter, reached via a winding coastal road that's genuinely fun on two wheels.
  10. Kefalari Springs — a natural spring and small gorge at the foot of Mount Chaon just outside Argos, a nice short detour.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Argos?

For scooters up to 50cc, category AM is enough, and you can rent from age 16. Anything 125cc and above needs the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and riders must be at least 18; a car licence alone won't cover you here. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual rental company.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Argos?

Prices swing with the season, roughly EUR 20-25 per day in low season up to EUR 35-50 in high season, with premium models running EUR 45-70 per day.

  • Cheapest: November to March
  • Priciest: July and August
  • Best value with good weather: May-June and September-October

When to book a rental motorcycle in Argos?

July and August are Argos and the Argolid's high season — hot, busy, and the time to book ahead if you want your pick of bikes. From November to March things go quiet, prices drop, and many operators scale back. For the best balance of mild weather, open roads and fair prices, aim for May-June or September-October.

Local traffic rules in Argos

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for rider and passenger alike, and police do check. Speed limits run 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on the open road and up to 110-130 km/h on highways, though smaller-engine bikes are capped lower. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to skip the wine with lunch if you're riding after. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and remember that leaving the tarmac — dirt tracks, beaches, unpaved shortcuts — usually voids your insurance outright.
