Serifos rewards anyone willing to leave the port on two wheels. Wind up out of Livadi towards Chora and the switchbacks climb past whitewashed cubes to a Venetian kastro perched over the Aegean, the whole bay unfolding below you. Push further and the island opens up — the old mining harbour at Megalo Livadi, the quiet arc of Ganema beach, the sand at Psili Ammos waiting for a swim. This is an island built for a scooter, not a coach tour.
Serifos is barely 15 kilometres across, but its roads are steep, narrow and full of hairpins between Chora and Livadi, with several beaches and villages reachable only by tight paved or unpaved lanes a car simply can't handle. A scooter or small motorcycle covers the whole island comfortably in a day, which is exactly why so many visitors choose to rent a scooter in Serifos rather than wait for the local bus.
For mopeds up to 50cc you'll need at least a category AM licence, and the minimum age is usually 16, though rental shops on the island often set their own higher minimum. Anything from 125cc up requires a matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A — and a standard car licence won't be accepted as a substitute. If your licence was issued outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the operator.
A scooter runs roughly EUR 20–25 per day in low season and EUR 35–50 per day in high season; a larger motorcycle or ATV can reach EUR 45–65 per day at the peak.
High season runs July and August, when prices peak and scooters can sell out on a small island like this — book well ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, though many island rental shops close entirely over those months. May, June and September strike the best balance: mild weather, open shops and lower prices, so booking a week or two ahead is usually enough.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers, and the police do enforce this, with real fines for skipping one. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Serifos's hairpins rarely let you get close to that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to treat any riding day as an alcohol-free one. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved tracks and beaches, so stick to the tarmac to stay covered.
