There is a quiet freedom to riding into the countryside around Kilkis, Greece, that a bus timetable can never give you. Rent a motorcycle here and you can head east to Lake Kerkini for herons and lakeside tavernas, or north toward Lake Doirani, where the water laps right up against the border with North Macedonia. The roads stay open, the villages stay small, and the ride itself becomes part of the trip rather than just the way between two points on a map.
Kilkis is a compact, unhurried regional capital, which is exactly why a motorcycle suits it so well. There is little urban traffic to fight through, so you don't need a heavy or high-powered machine just to get around town. What you do need is range: the lakes, mountains and border villages worth seeing sit anywhere from 20 to 70 km out, distances that are awkward on foot or by infrequent regional bus but effortless once you're on two wheels. A motorcycle rental in Kilkis turns a string of separate day trips into one flexible, unhurried loop.
Requirements depend on the size of the bike. Mopeds up to 50cc need at least an AM category licence; anything from 125cc upward requires the matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A. A standard car licence will not cover you here, so bring the right category with you, along with an International Driving Permit if your licence was issued outside the EU. Minimum age is generally 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for motorcycle categories, though many rental companies set their own, slightly higher, minimums. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the exact amount set by the individual operator.
A standard scooter or 125cc bike runs from around 20 to 28 EUR per day in low season, rising to roughly 35–45 EUR per day in high season. If you want something larger or more premium, budget 50 to 80 EUR per day.
High season runs July to August, when prices peak and the best bikes get booked up fastest — reserve ahead if you're travelling then. Low season, November to March, brings the cheapest rates but also colder, wetter riding conditions. For the sweet spot, aim for May, June, September or October, when the weather is kind and prices sit well below the summer peak.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict, so don't skip one to save time. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas, 90 km/h on the open road and 110 km/h on dual carriageways, with lower limits for smaller-engine bikes. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but motorcyclists face a stricter 0.2 g/l, so plan to ride sober. Keep to sealed roads, since insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or off-road riding, and carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you at all times.
