Fira's clifftop lanes were never built for buses and rental sedans, and you'll feel that the moment you swap four wheels for two. On a scooter you can slip past the crawl of tour coaches near the caldera edge, tuck into a spot in Oia that a car would never fit, and be watching the sunset over the volcano with everyone else already seated. Ride the coastal road down to Akrotiri one morning and you're standing among Bronze-Age ruins by lunch; head the other way and Kamari's black-sand beach is waiting for an afternoon swim.

Santorini rewards two wheels precisely because it punishes four. The roads between Fira and Oia are narrow, twisting and often jammed in high season, so a nimble 50cc or 125cc scooter threads through where cars sit idling. The island itself is barely 18km end to end, which means most sights are 10 to 30 minutes apart — close enough that a scooter's speed and easy parking beat a car for a full day of hopping between caldera viewpoints, villages and beaches. And because the terrain climbs and switches back rather than running flat, a light, responsive bike suits the volcanic landscape far better than a heavy touring machine.

Top 10 things to see in Santorini by scooter

  1. Oia — the island's iconic sunset viewpoint over the caldera, and the classic end point of the coastal ride from Fira.
  2. Fira to Oia caldera-rim road — the signature scenic route on the island, with clifftop views over the volcano the whole way.
  3. Imerovigli — a quieter caldera viewpoint just north of Fira, far less crowded than Oia at sunset.
  4. Akrotiri archaeological site — an excavated Bronze-Age Minoan settlement, an easy ride to the southern tip of the island.
  5. Red Beach (Kokkini Paralia) — distinctive red volcanic cliffs and sand near Akrotiri, a short walk from the parking area.
  6. Perissa Black Sand Beach — a long black-sand beach on the southeast coast, popular for swimming and tavernas.
  7. Kamari Beach — another black-sand beach town, close to ancient Thira, good for rounding off a coastal loop.
  8. Ancient Thira (Mesa Vouno) — hilltop ruins above Kamari with sweeping views, reached via a winding switchback road.
  9. Pyrgos Kallistis village — a hilltop traditional village with a Venetian kastro and views across the whole island.
  10. Profitis Ilias monastery — the island's highest point, with panoramic 360-degree views well worth the climb by bike.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Santorini?

For a 50cc moped you'll need at least a category AM licence, and the minimum age is 16 — though rental shops often set the bar higher and may ask for a minimum time you've held your licence. Step up to a 125cc scooter or larger and you'll need the matching motorcycle category, A1, A2 or A; a standard car licence isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit (IDP). Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the amount varying by operator and vehicle.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Santorini?

A standard 50cc scooter runs 35-50 EUR per day in high season, while a 125cc-300cc motorcycle costs 50-80 EUR per day over the same period. Where available, larger touring or sport motorcycles (500cc and above) go for 70-120 EUR per day, though these tend to come through mainland rental chains rather than local Santorini shops.

  • Prices peak in July and August, the busiest and most expensive months.
  • Shoulder months (April-May, October) sit around 25-35 EUR per day.
  • Low season (November-March) drops to 20-30 EUR per day, though many shops close entirely over winter.

When to book a rental scooter in Santorini?

Book well ahead if you're travelling in July or August: prices are highest and scooters sell out fast in high season. May-June and September-October offer a good balance of open roads, mild heat and lower rates. If you're visiting in the low season from November to March, check availability first, since many local rental shops shut down for the winter rather than lowering their prices.

Local traffic rules in Santorini

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers alike, and enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though narrow island lanes rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to skip the wine if you're riding that day. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and beaches, so stick to the tarmac.
