Kalamaria puts you right on the Thessaloniki waterfront, and a motorcycle turns that location into a launchpad. Point yourself along the seafront promenade of Nea Paralia in the morning, its parks and cafés sliding past, then keep the throttle open toward the White Tower before doubling back to Aretsou Marina for a coffee with the boats. By afternoon you could be on the coast road south to Peraia for a swim, or climbing into the hills for the cooler air of Mount Chortiatis. Few cities pack this much variety into such an easy loop, and a motorcycle rental in Kalamaria is what makes it possible.

Central Thessaloniki is dense, parking is genuinely hard to find, and buses get stuck in the same traffic as everyone else. Two wheels sidestep both problems: you filter past the queues and park almost anywhere. Kalamaria's own roads are flat and coastal, ideal for a scooter darting between local sights, while a proper motorcycle gives you the range and comfort for the hillier runs out to Chortiatis or down to the beaches of Halkidiki. Whichever you choose, you're not tied to timetables or taxi ranks — you set the route.

Top 10 things to see in Kalamaria by motorcycle

  1. Nea Paralia (New Waterfront) — a long seafront promenade with themed parks running from Kalamaria's edge all the way to the White Tower, an easy, scenic coastal ride.
  2. White Tower of Thessaloniki — the city's iconic Byzantine-era landmark and a natural end point for the waterfront ride from Kalamaria.
  3. Palataki (Karabournaki headland) — a neoclassical mansion on a small headland, once used by the Greek royal family, a short ride out to a quiet sea-view spot.
  4. Aretsou Marina — a waterfront district with a small marina, cafés and open sea views, a popular short local ride.
  5. Nea Krini seafront — a coastal stretch just north of Kalamaria's center, good for an easy evening cruise along the water.
  6. Peraia Beach — a beach town a short ride south along the Thermaic Gulf coast, popular for a swim-and-ride afternoon.
  7. Epanomi — a coastal village further south with beaches and tavernas, a favourite longer coastal loop for scooters and motorcycles.
  8. Ano Poli and the Byzantine Walls — steep, winding streets in the old hillside quarter with panoramic views over the city and gulf, a rewarding twisty ride.
  9. Mount Chortiatis — a forested mountain above Thessaloniki with cooler air and viewpoints over the city, a classic day-trip route for riders.
  10. Halkidiki (Kassandra peninsula) — the nearest of Halkidiki's three "legs," reached in under two hours, the region's signature long-distance ride from Thessaloniki.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Kalamaria?

For anything from 125cc upward you'll need a motorcycle licence in the matching category — A1, A2 or A — and rental shops in Greece are required to check that it fits the bike. Smaller 50cc scooters only need category AM, available from age 16, while A1/A2 motorcycle licences require you to be at least 18. If your licence was issued outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. A deposit is standard practice, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual operator.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Kalamaria?

A standard 125cc-class scooter or motorcycle runs roughly EUR 20–28 per day in low season, with our own listings starting around EUR 25 per day. In high season that climbs to roughly EUR 35–55 per day for the same class, and larger-CC or premium touring bikes can run EUR 60–120+ per day.

  • Prices are lowest from November through February, when demand drops off.
  • July and August are the most expensive months, with bikes often selling out in advance.
  • May, June, September and October sit in between — good riding weather without peak-season prices.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Kalamaria?

If you're planning a July or August trip, book several weeks ahead — that's when demand and prices both peak and popular models get snapped up early. Aim for May, June, September or October if you want warm weather, lighter traffic and lower daily rates. Outside these windows, from November to March, Kalamaria stays quieter and rentals cheaper, though some smaller operators trim their opening hours over winter.

Local traffic rules in Kalamaria

Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger on a scooter, moped or motorcycle — enforcement is strict and fines are steep. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas like central Kalamaria, rising to 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but a tighter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's safest to skip alcohol entirely before riding. Keep your licence, IDP if required, rental agreement and insurance papers with you, and stick to paved roads — rental insurance almost never covers unpaved tracks or beaches.
