Picture leaving the flat Thessalian plain behind and climbing into pine forest until a lake appears below the road — that first view of Limni Plastira is the reason people rent a motorcycle in Karditsa. Start from Plateia Riga Fereou in the town centre, and within half an hour you can be tracing the reservoir's lakeside loop, stopping in Neochori for a coffee over the water or pushing on to the viewpoints above Neraida. It's the kind of ride you'd struggle to plan around a bus timetable.
Karditsa itself is easy, flat riding, so a scooter feels almost effortless around town. But the real appeal is what sits 20 to 40 km away: the winding lake road at Plastira, the mountain villages of Argithea, and the narrow lanes up toward the Agrafa foothills. A car manages these routes, but a two-wheeler threads the tight village turns and gorge roads far more naturally, and a day loop that looks long on the map is over quickly once you're moving. This is exactly the terrain where motorcycle rental in Karditsa pays off.
For scooters up to 50cc, category AM covers you from age 16. Anything from 125cc upward needs the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A depending on the bike — and riders must be at least 18. A standard car licence won't cover a 125cc scooter here, so check your category before booking. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. A deposit is standard, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual rental operator.
A standard scooter runs EUR 20–28 per day in low season, rising to EUR 30–45 in high season. If you want a larger-cc or premium touring bike for the mountain routes to Argithea or Plastira, expect EUR 35–50 or more per day.
July and August are Karditsa's high season, with the best availability and the highest prices, especially for anything bigger than a standard scooter. Low season runs November to March, when demand drops and prices follow it down, though it's worth confirming an operator is open before you plan around a low-season trip. Spring and early autumn sit comfortably in between, and often make for the most pleasant riding weather in the mountains.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict, with real fines behind it. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on the open road and up to 110 km/h on dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and riders in their first two years of licence. Rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and off-road use, so keep to tarmac, and carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you at all times.
