Thasos rewards anyone willing to get off the beach towel. Ring a scooter's throttle open on the road south from Limenas and within an hour you can be swimming in the turquoise pools of Giola Lagoon or standing on the white marble sand of Saliara. This is an island built for two wheels — small enough to circle in a day, wild enough that half its best corners never see a tour bus.
At roughly 100km around, Thasos is compact by Aegean standards, and outside Limenas the traffic thins to almost nothing. That makes it ideal territory to rent a scooter in Thasos: an automatic 100–125cc handles the coastal curves and the pine-forest climbs with ease, while a slightly bigger step-up model gives you more confidence on the steeper inland roads toward Panagia and Theologos. Cars simply can't reach some of these places the way a scooter can.
For a moped up to 50cc, a category AM licence is enough. Anything larger, from 125cc up, needs the matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A — and Greek rental shops are required to check this against your documents, so bring your licence and, if you're from outside the EU, an International Driving Permit. Minimum age is generally 16 for a 50cc moped and 18 for the bigger categories, though many rental companies set their own higher minimum and expect you to have held your licence for a while. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual operator.
A basic 50–100cc scooter runs around 20–25 EUR per day in low season and 30–45 EUR in high season. Step up to a 125–300cc scooter or motorbike, or consider an ATV or buggy, and prices move to roughly 40–70 EUR per day.
High season runs July through August, when prices climb and the best scooters can sell out — book well ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when many island rental shops close entirely, so plan around that if you're visiting off-peak. May, June and September strike the best balance: pleasant riding weather, lighter traffic, and prices well below the summer peak.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for going without one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though smaller-engine bikes may be capped lower. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but motorcyclists and newly licensed riders face a stricter 0.2 g/l. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and dirt tracks, so the short gravel stretch down to Giola Lagoon is best walked, not ridden.

Most providers include basic third-party liability insurance in the rental price, with options to upgrade to fuller coverage that reduces or removes your deposit liability in case of damage or theft. Always confirm exactly what is and isn’t covered before you set off.
When you make an online motorbike reservation you can also order the following extra services and equipment: integral helmet, GPS navigation, intercom, unlimited mileage, top case, side cases, boots, jacket, gloves, individual guide or tour, map, full insurance, one-way rental, or delivery to your chosen address.
