Arta doesn't announce itself the way the big-name Greek destinations do, and that's exactly the appeal. Roll out of town on a motorcycle and within minutes you're tracing the Arachthos river toward the old stone Gefyri tis Artas, then climbing into the Tzoumerka foothills where the road narrows, the air cools, and villages like Kalarrytes appear clinging to the mountainside. This is a place built for two wheels: gorges, switchbacks, and stone hamlets that reward the rider willing to chase the next bend.
The old town itself is easy on foot, but everything that makes Arta worth the trip — the Tzoumerka (Athamanika) range, the cliffside monasteries, the Amvrakikos lagoon — is scattered across winding roads that see little traffic and even less public transport. Buses out to villages like Syrrako run rarely, if at all, which makes a scooter or motorcycle the only realistic way to reach them and still make it back for dinner. If you want to rent a motorcycle in Arta, this is really the only way to see the region properly.
For scooters up to 50cc you'll need at least an AM category licence; anything 125cc and above requires the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece. Minimum age is generally 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though rental companies often set their own higher minimums. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual operator.
A standard 50-125cc scooter runs roughly 20-25 EUR per day in low season and 30-45 EUR in high season, while larger-cc motorcycles or premium models run 45-70 EUR per day.
July and August are Arta's high season, with the best selection of bikes going early and prices at their peak. November through March is low season, when many shops trim their fleets and prices drop to their lowest — but it's also cold in the mountains. For the best balance of good weather, open roads and fair prices, May-June and September-October are hard to beat.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads, and up to 130 km/h on motorways — though on Tzoumerka's mountain bends, the road itself will keep you well under that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a tighter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists, so it's best to leave the bike parked if you've been drinking. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, and remember that leaving paved roads — tempting as some of the gorge tracks look — typically voids your insurance entirely.
