Edessa rewards anyone willing to get off the main square and onto the back roads. Ride out past the Edessa Waterfalls and the old mills of the Water Museum, then keep going until the town gives way to farmland, lake shore and mountain switchbacks. This is a place best explored on two wheels, where a short climb up to Varosi's cobbled lanes or a longer loop out to Vegoritida Lake turns an ordinary afternoon into the kind of trip you actually remember.
Edessa itself is compact and walkable, but its best moments sit 20 to 50 km outside town, along quiet secondary roads that twist through hills and orchards. A car feels heavy-handed here, and parking near the old town or the falls is genuinely tight. A scooter or motorcycle solves both problems at once: light enough for the narrow streets, quick enough to make the day trips to hot springs, lakes and ruins feel effortless rather than like a chore.
For scooters up to 50cc, category AM is enough and the minimum age is 16. Anything from 125cc upward needs the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A — and riders must be at least 18. A standard car licence won't cover you on a scooter here, so bring the right category with you. If your licence isn't from an EU country, carry an International Driving Permit as well. Rental shops typically ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount depending on the operator and the bike.
A basic 50–125cc scooter runs 20–25 EUR per day in low season and 35–45 EUR per day in high season. If you want something bigger, larger-cc motorcycles or automatic maxi-scooters go for 50–80 EUR per day.
High season runs July to August, when prices peak and demand is highest, so booking ahead pays off. Low season stretches from November to March, with the lowest daily rates but also fewer riders. May, June, September and October sit comfortably in between — mild weather, thinner crowds and reasonable prices make them the sweet spot for exploring the waterfalls, lake and mountain roads at a relaxed pace.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on scooters and motorcycles, and enforcement is strict, with real fines for skipping one. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though smaller-engine bikes may be capped lower. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to leave the bike parked if you've been drinking. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride.
