Kasos does not look like an island built for cars. It looks like an island built for wandering — past the fishing boats bobbing in Bouka Harbour, up dusty lanes to the acropolis at Poli, out along coast roads that end at coves most visitors never see. Ride out from Fry in the morning and you could be swimming at Emporios Beach within minutes, then chasing sunset light over Antiperatos Beach by evening. This is the kind of place a scooter was made for.
At just 66 square kilometres, with five villages linked by quiet, lightly trafficked roads, Kasos rewards exactly the kind of freedom a scooter or light motorbike gives you. Buses are scarce and taxis scarcer, but a bike gets you to Helatros, Avlaki Bay and the chapel of Agia Kyriaki — places where the tarmac turns to gravel and a rental car would struggle. If you want to rent a motorbike in Kasos, this is an island where that decision pays off on the very first afternoon.
Marmara Beach, on nearby Armathia islet, is worth a boat trip to round out your stay — it's one place a motorbike simply can't take you.
For scooters up to 50cc you'll need at least an AM category licence, and riders must be 16 or older. For anything 125cc and up, you'll need the matching motorcycle category — A1, A2 or A — and be at least 18; a car licence alone won't cover you. If your licence isn't from the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Rental shops will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and vehicle.
A basic 50cc scooter runs EUR 20–25 per day in low season and EUR 30–40 in high season, while larger motorbikes climb to EUR 45–55 per day, and premium models can reach EUR 45–60 at the peak of summer.
Book early if you're travelling in July or August — festival crowds mean scooters and motorbikes sell out fast and prices sit at their highest. May, June, September and October are calmer and cheaper, with pleasant riding weather and far less competition for the good bikes. Many island rental shops close entirely from November to March, so outside the shoulder and high seasons, don't expect to find a vehicle at all.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement is strict, with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Kasos's narrow lanes rarely invite going that fast anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most riders, but only 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to leave the bike parked if you've been drinking. Keep in mind that insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and off-road use, so on routes like Avlaki's dirt track, ride carefully and stay aware of what's covered.
