Gerakas sits at the quiet southern tip of Zakynthos, and the best way to feel that is on two wheels. Rent a motorbike here and the loggerhead turtles' nesting beach right below the village is only the start — a ten-minute ride puts you at the tavernas of Porto Roma, and a short loop north brings you to the buzz of Laganas or the sheltered shallows of Banana Beach. Push further west and the road climbs to Cape Keri, where the cliffs turn red-gold at sunset over the water.

This corner of the island wasn't built for buses. Vasilikos is a peninsula of scattered coves connected by quiet, mostly paved roads with a few gentle hills, and public transport out here runs on its own unhurried schedule. A scooter or small motorcycle closes that gap: distances between beaches are short, ten to thirty minutes apart, so range and fuel are never a worry, and you can stop wherever the coastline looks good instead of where the timetable says.

Top 10 things to see in Gerakas by motorcycle

  1. Gerakas Beach — the protected loggerhead turtle nesting beach on your doorstep, golden sand between cliffs, sunbeds kept well back from the nesting line.
  2. Kalamaki Beach — a short ride up the coast road to a lively resort beach with tavernas and watersports.
  3. Laganas Beach & village — the island's main tourist strip, easy to reach for nightlife, shops and the widest stretch of sand on the bay.
  4. Cape Keri Lighthouse — a sunset viewpoint over dramatic red-and-white limestone cliffs on the southwest coast.
  5. Marathonisi (Turtle Island) viewpoint at Keri — a roadside lookout above the bay where boats set off for the turtle-shaped islet, a great photo stop on a loop ride.
  6. Vasilikos Peninsula coast road — a scenic ride linking a string of coves south of Gerakas, made for unhurried exploring.
  7. Porto Roma — a small sheltered bay minutes from Gerakas, perfect for a swim stop with a taverna right on the water.
  8. Banana Beach — shallow, calm and sandy, an easy detour off the Gerakas–Laganas road.
  9. Zakynthos Town (Chora) — the island capital, with its Venetian-style square, Solomos Museum and harbour, worth the ride across the island.
  10. Argassi — a coastal town between Zakynthos Town and Vasilikos, a natural stopover with beach bars along the way north.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Gerakas?

For a moped up to 50cc you'll need at least category AM, while anything from 125cc and up requires the matching motorcycle licence — A1, A2 or A. A car licence alone isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece, so check your category before booking. The minimum age is generally 16 for 50cc mopeds and 18 for the larger categories, though many rental shops set their own higher minimum and may ask for a minimum licence-holding period. If you're travelling from outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the individual operator.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Gerakas?

Average rental prices run from 15-20 EUR per day in low season up to 30-40 EUR per day in high season, with larger motorbikes over 250cc or ATVs and quads reaching 40-60 EUR per day.

  • July and August are the most expensive months, when demand across the island peaks.
  • April, May and October offer the cheapest rates and quieter roads.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Gerakas?

High season runs July through August, when prices climb and the best bikes get booked out early — worth reserving well ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches from November to March, when many island rental shops close entirely, so it's not a realistic time to plan a ride. May, June, September and October sit in between: pleasant riding weather, easier availability, and prices closer to the low end.

Local traffic rules in Gerakas

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and enforcement on the islands is strict, with fines to match. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though smaller-engine bikes often run lower limits in practice. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, dropping to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and riders in their first two years on a licence. Keep in mind that insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and beaches, so once you leave the tarmac you're on your own.
