Anafi rewards the traveller who's willing to leave the port behind. Rent a motorcycle here and you can be sipping coffee in Chora within minutes, then climbing the coast road toward Roukounas Beach by lunchtime — routes a bus schedule (there isn't one) would never let you piece together in a single day.

This is a small, quiet island with barely any traffic and only a short web of paved and dirt roads linking the port, Chora and the south-coast beaches — so a scooter isn't a luxury here, it's close to the only way around. The terrain is hilly rather than harsh, which makes it forgiving even for riders who don't do this often, and it's the only way to reach the rough track up to Kalamos and its monastery, somewhere no taxi will take you.

Top 10 things to see in Anafi by motorcycle

  1. Chora (Anafi village) — the whitewashed hub of the island, all narrow lanes and cafes, and the natural starting point for every ride.
  2. Kalamos (Monastir Kalamos) — one of the tallest monolithic rocks in the Mediterranean, looming over the island's east end.
  3. Monastery of Panagia Kalamiotissa — perched near the summit of Kalamos, reached by a rough track and a final walk on foot; Anafi's signature pilgrimage ride.
  4. Klisidi Beach — the closest sandy beach to the port, an easy first stop to get your bearings.
  5. Roukounas Beach — a long, dune-backed stretch of sand just past Klisidi.
  6. Katsouni Beach — quieter and further along the south coast road, worth the extra distance.
  7. Ancient Anafi (Kastelli) — ruins of the ancient acropolis above Kastelli, with sea views the whole way up.
  8. Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi — a short, easy climb from Chora to a hilltop view over the harbor.
  9. Agios Nikolaos — a small coastal spot off the main strip, good for riders who want to see more of the island's back roads.
  10. Prekas Ruins — scattered Venetian-era fortification remains near Chora, an easy stop mid-ride.

What do you need to rent a motorcycle in Anafi?

For anything above a 50cc moped you'll need a motorcycle licence matching the bike's engine size — A1, A2 or A — and rental shops in Greece are required to check it. For 50cc mopeds, category AM and a minimum age of 16 will do, though most operators set the bar at 18 anyway. Non-EU visitors should bring an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual rental company.

How much does it cost to rent a motorcycle in Anafi?

Average rental prices run from EUR 20–25 per day in low season up to EUR 30–40 per day in high season, with premium models reaching EUR 40–55 per day.

  • Cheapest around April–May and October, once the island quiets down.
  • Priciest in July and August, when demand peaks alongside the heat.

When to book a rental motorcycle in Anafi?

July and August are Anafi's high season — hot, busy and the most expensive months to rent, with bikes selling out if you wait too long. Book ahead if you're travelling then. April, May and October sit in the low season, with better prices and a more relaxed island to ride around, though some shops scale back or close outside the warmer months, so it's worth confirming availability before you arrive.

Local traffic rules in Anafi

Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger — enforcement is strict and fines aren't small. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Anafi's narrow, hilly lanes rarely let you get near that anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but tightens to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists, so it's best to treat it as effectively zero. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or off-road riding, which matters if you're heading up toward Kalamos — stick to what's covered and check with your rental company beforehand.
