Picture leaving the harbourside road of Argostoli behind and climbing into the folds of Kefalonia on two wheels — wind, pine air, and the sea reappearing at every bend. One morning you're descending the switchbacks toward Myrtos Beach, its turquoise water framed by cliffs; the next you're weaving through the stone lanes of Fiskardo or crossing the causeway of the De Bosset Bridge at sunset. A scooter turns the drive itself into the sightseeing, not just the way to get there.
Kefalonia's roads are narrow, steep and full of hairpins, and the best spots — the Myrtos viewpoint, Assos, Fiskardo, the road up Mount Ainos — sit at the end of exactly that kind of stretch, where cars queue and parking runs out fast in summer. A scooter or small motorcycle slips through the traffic, parks wherever you like, and lets you cover the island's short but twisting distances without losing half your day to a rental car jam.
For mopeds up to 50cc you need at least an AM category licence and a minimum age of 16; for anything from 125cc up you'll need the matching motorcycle category (A1, A2 or A) and to be at least 18. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their licence. A deposit is standard practice, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual rental shop.
Expect to pay around 20-25 EUR per day for a 50-125cc scooter in low season, rising to 35-50 EUR per day in July and August. Larger motorcycles or quad alternatives run from roughly 45-70+ EUR per day.
July and August are Kefalonia's high season — hot, busy, and the time scooters sell out fastest, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season, when many shops reduce their fleet or shut for the winter. For the sweet spot of open shops, easier riding weather and fair prices, aim for May-June or September-October.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers, and police enforcement is strict. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though Kefalonia's mountain roads rarely let you reach that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists. Keep your licence, IDP, rental agreement and insurance papers with you, and stick to paved roads — rental insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beaches.
