Kefalonia rewards the traveller who leaves the car behind. Picture the road curling down toward Myrtos Beach, switchback after switchback, until that curve of white pebbles and impossibly blue water opens up beneath you — a view that photos never quite capture and a road that's simply more fun on two wheels. Further north, the harbour at Fiskardo waits with its pastel Venetian houses and yachts bobbing at anchor, reached by a coast road that begs to be ridden slowly, windows down, or in this case, visor up.
This is a big, mountainous island, and its best sights are scattered along narrow, twisting roads that a rental car handles clumsily and a coach can't reach at all. A scooter changes that completely. You can park right at the trailhead above Myrtos, thread through the tight lanes of Assos without hunting for a space, and stop wherever the view demands it. If you're planning to rent a scooter in Kefalonia, you'll find it's simply the most practical way to see an island built on distance and elevation rather than one compact old town.
For mopeds up to 50cc, a category AM licence is enough, and the minimum age is generally 16 — though most rental companies set their own minimum, often higher. Anything from 125cc upward calls for a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A), and Greek rental shops are required to check this before handing over the keys; a car licence alone won't cover you on a bigger scooter. If your licence was issued outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the rental company.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you're looking at roughly 5-10 EUR per day for a basic scooter, while high season pushes that up to around 15-25 EUR per day. Bigger, premium models run about 25-35 EUR per day whenever they're available.
If you're travelling in July or August, book ahead — scooters get snapped up fast and prices sit at their yearly high. Aim instead for May, June, September or October if your dates are flexible: the weather is still warm, the roads are quieter, and rental prices drop noticeably. Outside the winter months, when many rental points shut entirely, booking a week or two ahead is usually enough to secure a good scooter at a fair price.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do enforce this, with real fines attached. Speed limits are 50 km/h in towns and villages, 90 km/h on open roads, rising to 110 km/h on dual carriageways. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies if you're a novice rider in your first two licence years. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers unpaved roads, dirt tracks or beach riding — stick to tarmac and you'll stay covered. Carry your licence, IDP if required, rental agreement and insurance papers with you whenever you ride, especially on island roads, which can turn narrow, gravelly and steep with little warning.
