Volos sits at the foot of Mount Pelion, and that's the real reason to grab a scooter here rather than a bus ticket. Ride up out of the harbour and within twenty minutes you're winding through chestnut and beech forest toward Makrinitsa, the "balcony of Pelion," where a cobbled square shaded by a giant plane tree opens onto views over the whole Pagasetic Gulf. Push a little further and you reach Damouchari, the pebble cove where "Mamma Mia!" was filmed, or the twin coves of Mylopotamos Beach split by their own natural rock arch. None of this is easy to reach any other way.
The city itself is small enough to cross in minutes, so a scooter never feels like overkill for getting around town. Its real value shows once you head for the hills: Pelion's roads are a tangle of switchbacks linking stone villages to hidden beaches, the kind of route a bus can't follow and a car struggles to park on. On two wheels you can stop wherever a view or a taverna catches your eye, and parking at each village square takes seconds.
For mopeds up to 50cc, a category AM licence is enough, and the minimum age is usually 16. Anything larger — 125cc and up — needs a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A), and rental shops in Greece are required to check it. A standard car licence does not cover a scooter here. If your licence was issued outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the individual rental company.
Prices swing a lot across the year. In low season a basic scooter can run as little as 5–10 EUR a day, while July and August push standard models up to 20–35 EUR a day. If you want a larger-cc or newer model for tackling the Pelion switchbacks in comfort, budget 45–70 EUR a day at peak times.
July and August are Volos's high season — hot, busy, and the time scooters sell out fastest, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season, with the cheapest rates but also the quietest mountain villages and some shops closed altogether. May, June, September and October hit a comfortable middle ground: mild weather, open tavernas, and easier availability if you'd rather not plan weeks in advance.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police enforcement is strict, with real fines behind it. Speed limits are 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though Pelion's mountain bends rarely let you get near that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but it drops to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you, and stick to paved roads — insurance almost never covers dirt tracks or beach riding.
