Livadeia doesn't feel like a place built for tour buses, and that's exactly its charm. Park your scooter by the Springs of Krya, where the Herkyna river bubbles up right in the middle of town, then follow the water uphill to the Herkyna Gorge and the Castle of Livadeia, a short, twisting climb that rewards you with the whole old town laid out below. From there the real adventure starts: this is a base for riding into the hills of Boeotia, past olive groves and quiet villages, toward some of the most important ancient sites in Greece.
A scooter fits this town in a way a car never could. Livadeia's old quarter is a knot of narrow lanes and stone bridges where parking a car is a headache and a bicycle wears you out on the climbs. What makes a scooter genuinely useful here, though, is the ring of sights just outside town — Delphi, Osios Loukas, Chaeronea — all sitting 10 to 50 km out along winding, lightly trafficked provincial roads. Those are scooter distances almost exactly: too far to comfortably walk or cycle in the heat, too close to bother with a car and a parking search. If you're planning to rent a scooter in Livadeia, this is the trip it was made for.
For a standard 50cc scooter you'll need at least a category AM licence, and the minimum age is 16, though rental companies often set their own higher age limit. If you're planning to ride a larger scooter of 125cc or more, you'll need a motorcycle licence in the matching category (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone isn't accepted as a substitute in Greece. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually as a credit-card hold, with the exact amount set by the rental company.
A standard 50cc scooter runs from EUR 5 to EUR 10 per day in low season, and EUR 15 to EUR 25 per day in high season. If you'd rather have more power or an automatic, larger-cc premium models go for EUR 25 to EUR 35 per day in high season.
July and August are high season, with the best weather, the busiest roads and the highest prices — book ahead if you're travelling then, since scooters do sell out. November through March is low season, when many operators offer their cheapest rates but some island-style shops may run reduced hours. If you want a middle ground, May, June, September and October give you pleasant riding temperatures without the peak-season crowds or prices.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger on scooters, and enforcement comes with real fines, so don't skip it. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open roads you'll take toward Delphi or Chaeronea. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but it drops to a strict 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and riders in their first two years of licensing — best to keep it at zero if you're riding. Keep to paved roads: rental insurance almost always excludes dirt tracks and off-road riding, and a lapse can void your cover entirely.
