Picture this: a car-free stretch of Peloponnese coastline, a five-minute ferry hop from the mainland, and a bay of turquoise so bright it looks retouched. That's Elafonisos. Once you're on the island, a scooter is what turns it from a postcard into an afternoon you actually spend — buzzing down the coastal lane to Simos Beach for a swim, then further along to the dunes at Sarakiniko before the day gets hot.

Elafonisos is tiny and mostly flat, with a handful of kilometres separating its best beaches and a village lane network too narrow for most rental cars to bother with. Some of the nicest coves sit at the end of unpaved tracks, which is exactly where a scooter earns its keep. There's no bus timetable to plan around and barely any traffic to fight — you just go, and that's why almost everyone who visits ends up choosing a scooter rental in Elafonisos for at least a day.

Top 10 things to see in Elafonisos by scooter

  1. Simos Beach — the island's famous dual lagoon, with shallow turquoise water and a short ride south of Chora. Almost every rider's first stop.
  2. Panagia Beach (Kato Nisi) — a quieter, cedar-backed beach just past the Simos complex, on the same coastal road.
  3. Sarakiniko Beach — dunes and cedar trees on the eastern side, calmer than Simos, reached by a short inland-then-coastal ride.
  4. Kalogeros Beach — a remote mud-therapy beach on rougher ground, a good reason to put the scooter to work.
  5. Xortatiko Beach — a hidden sandy cove at the end of a short dirt track, popular precisely because it stays undeveloped.
  6. Chora (Elafonisos village) — the harbour town with tavernas and shops, and the natural start and end point of any loop.
  7. Lefki lighthouse area — a scenic ride out to the island's edge for sunset views across the strait toward Kythira.
  8. Cape Dry viewpoint (Akrotiri Xiro) — a windswept southern lookout with wide panoramic views of the sea.
  9. Old Village ruins (Palaiochora area) — the remains of the settlement abandoned after a 1944 flood, a short detour for anyone curious about local history.
  10. Pounta ferry crossing point — some riders take the short ferry back to the mainland and continue exploring the Neapoli Voion coast road on the same rental.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Elafonisos?

For mopeds up to 50cc, a category AM licence is enough, and the minimum age is usually 16. Anything larger — 125cc and up — needs a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A), and a standard car licence won't substitute for it in Greece. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental shops will also ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount set by the operator.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Elafonisos?

Expect to pay roughly EUR 5–10 per day in low season and EUR 15–25 per day in high season, with larger or newer scooters and quads running EUR 20–30 per day.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring into summer.
  • July and August are the priciest months, and bikes can sell out.
  • May, June, September and October offer the best value along with easier riding weather.

When to book a rental scooter in Elafonisos?

High season runs July to August, when demand is highest and prices peak — book ahead if you're travelling then. Many island rental shops close over winter, roughly November to March, so scooters simply aren't available. The sweet spot is May–June and September–October: quieter roads, more comfortable temperatures, and lower prices than the summer rush.

Local traffic rules in Elafonisos

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, and police do enforce it, with fines that aren't trivial. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on the open road, though on an island this size you'll rarely need to go that fast. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to motorcyclists. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers unpaved roads or beaches, so once you leave the tarmac for tracks like the one to Xortatiko, you're riding at your own risk. Carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you at all times.

If you wish to rent a scooter without a deposit and with zero risk, you will need to add full insurance to your reservation.
