Megara doesn't announce itself the way the big island resorts do, and that's exactly the appeal. Pick up a scooter here and within twenty minutes you're rolling along the coast road toward Alepochori Beach, wind in your face, tavernas waiting at the far end for a swim break and a plate of grilled fish. Push a little further and quieter water opens up at Psatha, the kind of cove you won't find in a bus tour. This is a town built for slow discovery on two wheels, not for being rushed through.
The geography does the selling for us. Megara's town center, its old fishing port, and a loose string of coves along the Saronic coast are spread too far apart to cover on foot, yet none of it justifies renting a car. Streets are narrow, parking is a non-issue right at the water's edge, and fuel costs stay low even if you spend the whole day hopping from beach to beach. A **scooter rental in Megara** simply matches the scale of the place.
For a standard 50cc scooter you'll need at least a category AM licence, and the minimum age is usually 16, though many rental companies set their own higher bar. Step up to a 125cc or larger model and you'll need a motorcycle licence matched to the engine size (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence alone won't cover you here. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Expect to leave a deposit, usually held on a credit card, with the amount varying by operator and vehicle.
Prices swing a lot with the season. A basic 50cc scooter starts around EUR 5-8 per day in the quieter months, rising to roughly EUR 15-25 per day in high summer. If you want something with more power, a 125cc automatic runs about EUR 25-40 per day.
July and August are Megara's high season — book ahead, since scooters sell out and prices peak alongside the crowds. November through March is low season, with the best rates but a more limited choice of open rental shops. If you can time your trip for late spring or early autumn, you'll get milder weather, easier riding, and prices well below the summer rush.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers alike, and police enforcement is strict with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on open roads and up to 130 km/h on motorways, though none of that applies much on Megara's coastal lanes. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and new drivers — best to just leave the wine for dinner after you've parked. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you whenever you ride, and stick to paved roads: insurance typically excludes beaches, dirt tracks and unpaved detours.
