Katerini keeps a low profile compared to the big island names, and that is exactly what makes it worth exploring on two wheels. Pick up a scooter and you can be on the sand at Paralia Katerinis in ten minutes, or aim inland toward Litochoro with Mount Olympus rising ahead of you the whole way. One afternoon you're cruising the coastal road with the sea on your right, the next you're winding uphill into a stone village that most visitors never find.

This is scooter country almost by design. The town, the beach strip and villages like Litochoro, Platamonas and Panteleimonas all sit within a 5–25km radius, linked by flat coastal roads with light traffic — no car needed, no bus timetables to work around. And once you're ready for something more, the same scooter carries you up the winding foothill roads into Olympus territory that would be a slog on foot and simply don't appear on any bus route.

Top 10 things to see in Katerini by scooter

  1. Paralia Katerinis — the town's own beachfront strip, a 5km ride from the center with cafes and a promenade, perfect for your first spin.
  2. Platamonas Castle — a Byzantine-Frankish fortress on a hilltop above the coast, reached by a short, scenic run south with the sea in view.
  3. Dion Archaeological Site — an ancient sanctuary city at the foot of Olympus, with a small river running through it and flat roads all the way in.
  4. Litochoro — the gateway town to Mount Olympus, about 15km out, with cobblestone streets and cafes looking straight up at the mountain.
  5. Enipeas Gorge — park up in Litochoro and hike the trail into the gorge toward its waterfalls.
  6. Old Panteleimonas — a restored stone-and-slate village above the coast; the winding climb up is half the reward.
  7. Korinos Beach — a quieter sandy stretch south of town, the local's pick over the main beach.
  8. Nei Poroi Beach — a coastal run north where the road stays flat and easy the whole way.
  9. The Pieria coastal road from Katerini to Platamonas — the classic local route, sea on one side and the Olympus foothills on the other.
  10. Prionia road — the paved climb out of Litochoro that gains real altitude, a favorite day trip for anyone on two wheels.

What do you need to rent a scooter in Katerini?

For mopeds up to 50cc, an AM category licence is enough and the minimum age is 16. Anything 125cc and up calls for a matching motorcycle licence (A1, A2 or A) — a car licence won't cover you here. Rental shops will usually ask for a deposit, held on your card or in cash, and if you're coming from outside the EU you'll need an International Driving Permit alongside your home licence.

How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Katerini?

Expect to pay between 5 and 10 EUR a day in low season, and 15 to 25 EUR a day once the summer crowds arrive. Premium models run 25 to 35 EUR a day.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring into summer, peaking in July and August.
  • They ease back down from September, bottoming out from November to March.
  • Booking a few days ahead in high season helps you avoid paying top rate for whatever's left.

When to book a rental scooter in Katerini?

July and August are the busiest and priciest months, so if you're travelling then, book early — scooters do sell out. November through March is the cheapest stretch, but Katerini is very much a summer beach town, and plenty of rental shops scale back or close over winter, so check availability before you count on it. May, June, September and October hit the sweet spot: milder weather, thinner crowds, and prices well below peak.

Local traffic rules in Katerini

Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for riders and passengers alike, and police do check. Speed limits sit at 50 km/h in town, 90 km/h on the open road and up to 110–130 km/h on faster roads, though smaller-engine scooters won't reach those anyway. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to a stricter 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and new drivers — best to skip the wine if you're riding back. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost never covers unpaved roads or off-road detours, so stick to the tarmac.
