Katerini doesn't feel like a place you rush through — it feels like a place you pedal through. Start at Plateia Eleftherias, grab a coffee, then roll down toward the coast along the Pieria coastal path, a flat paved stretch that carries you straight to the sand at Paralia Katerinis. Along the way you'll pass the kind of everyday town life — bakeries, orchards, quiet backstreets — that a bus window never quite shows you.
What makes this stretch of Pieria so good for two wheels is the terrain itself: the town and its beach suburb sit on flat coastal ground, joined by short, easy distances that a simple city bike handles without effort. You can criss-cross the seafront, detour into a village, or reach the ancient site at Dion, all without ever needing a car. The mountains inland are a different story — Litochoro, Old Panteleimonas and the Enipeas Gorge involve real climbing and distance, so save those for a fitter day or an e-bike.
Good news: renting a bicycle here doesn't involve any of the paperwork that comes with a scooter or car. No licence is required, and there's generally no age restriction beyond common sense for younger riders. Rental shops usually ask for a small deposit, often held on a credit card, and you won't need an International Driving Permit — that's strictly for motorised rentals.
Prices swing with the season. In low season you're looking at roughly 3–5 EUR per day, rising to about 7–12 EUR per day in high season. If you'd rather ride an e-bike or a higher-end model, expect around 15–25 EUR per day.
July and August are Katerini's high season — the beachfront fills up, prices climb, and it's worth booking a few days ahead to avoid missing out. For the best value, aim for May, June, September or October, when the weather is still pleasant for riding but prices sit closer to the low end. November through March is quiet season, and some rental points scale back or close for the winter.
Greece drives on the right, same as most of continental Europe, so a bicycle keeps to the right-hand side of the road or path. There's no legal helmet requirement for cyclists, though wearing one is always a sensible habit, especially near town traffic. Built-up areas carry a 50 km/h speed limit for vehicles, so drivers around you will be moving at moderate speed, and Greece's drink-driving limits are strict for motorists — another reason cycling along the coastal path feels like the relaxed way to see this stretch of Pieria.
