Rhodes rewards anyone willing to slow down and pedal. Swap the tour bus for a bicycle and the cobbled lanes of Rhodes Old Town open up on their own terms — you can duck past the Palace of the Grand Master, freewheel along Mandraki Harbour past the old windmills, and stop wherever the light looks good. Ride south along the coast and Faliraki Beach or the turquoise cove at Anthony Quinn Bay are suddenly within easy reach, no bus timetable required.
Rhodes is really two towns in one when it comes to getting around, and a bicycle suits both. The Old Town's narrow, pedestrian-scaled streets are awkward for a car and tight even for a scooter, but a bike slips through easily and parks anywhere. Outside the walls, the coastal roads north and south are mostly flat, which makes covering the distance to Kallithea Springs or Faliraki genuinely pleasant rather than a slog — and you'll spend nothing on fuel or moped licensing to get there.
None of this needs a licence — bicycles are open to anyone, no driving category or IDP required. Most rental shops set a minimum age around 12–14 for unaccompanied riders and may ask younger children to ride with an adult. A deposit is common, usually as a credit-card hold, though the exact amount depends on the shop and the bike; e-bikes tend to ask for a higher deposit than a basic beach cruiser.
Prices swing a lot with the season. In low season you can find a basic bike for as little as 3–7 EUR per day, while high season standard city or beach bikes run roughly 8–15 EUR per day. E-bikes and quality mountain or road bikes cost more, typically 15–25 EUR per day in peak months.
High season runs July–August, when prices peak and popular models can sell out, so booking a few days ahead is wise. Low season stretches November–March, when prices drop to their floor but many island rental shops close entirely. The sweet spot is May–June or September–October: warm enough to enjoy the coast roads, cooler than the summer heat, and shops are open with better availability.
Greece drives on the right, and that applies to cyclists too — keep to the right-hand side of the road and use marked cycle paths where they exist. Helmet rules for cyclists aren't as strictly enforced as for scooters and motorcycles, but wearing one is sensible on the coastal roads where traffic moves fast. Built-up areas carry a 50 km/h speed limit for vehicles, so expect cars to be moving briskly around you in town — ride defensively and stick to quieter lanes when you can. If you've had a drink, remember Greece's general blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l, tightening to 0.2 g/l for novice and professional drivers, so it's worth staying cautious even off a moped.
