Andros doesn't announce itself the way Santorini or Mykonos does, and that's exactly what makes it worth exploring by two wheels. Ride out of Chora's neoclassical lanes in the morning, coast down to a swim at Nimborio, then climb into the pine-covered hills toward the Sariza spring by afternoon — all without ever fighting for space with a tour bus. This is an island built on a human scale, and a bicycle lets you feel every bit of it.

Andros is mountainous, but it's also quiet: outside the peak of August, traffic on the secondary roads is genuinely light, and the distances between Chora, Batsi and the beaches sit in that sweet spot too short for a car rental to make sense and too varied for walking. Steep valleys and gravel side-roads reward a sturdy hybrid or e-bike, which will get you into villages, springs and coves a rental car would just drive past.

Top 10 things to see in Andros by bike

  1. Chora (Andros Town) — the island's capital, with a neoclassical old town, the Archaeological Museum and the Goulandris Museum of Contemporary Art worth an afternoon.
  2. Nimborio and Paraporti beaches — easy, flat rides just outside Chora, ideal for a short first outing with a swim at the end.
  3. Golden Beach (Chrysi Ammos) — one of the island's best sandy beaches, reached on a coastal ride near Korthi.
  4. Batsi — the main resort village on the west coast, a scenic coast-road ride that ends in tavernas.
  5. Apikia and the Sariza spring — a climb into the hills above Chora to the mineral spring that supplies Andros' bottled water.
  6. Moni Panachrantou — a mountain monastery reached via a steep, scenic climb through pine forest, a rewarding harder ride.
  7. Ormos Korthiou (Korthi Bay) — a picturesque fishing village and bay on the south coast, a longer ride across the island.
  8. Menites village and its fountains — a short, shaded ride to a lush village known for spring-fed marble fountains and gardens.
  9. Achla Beach — a remote beach reached by a dirt-track descent, popular with more adventurous riders.
  10. Tis Grias to Pidima rock formation — a striking coastal rock arch near Korthi, a great photo stop on a south-coast loop.

What do you need to rent a bike in Andros?

No licence is required to rent a bicycle, and there's no age restriction to speak of — this is one of the easiest ways to get around the island. Some operators may ask for a small deposit or an ID as security, but there's no IDP or driving documentation to worry about, unlike scooters or quads on the island.

How much does it cost to rent a bike in Andros?

A standard city or hybrid bike runs EUR 3–7 per day in low season and EUR 8–15 in high season. E-bikes and mountain bikes, better suited to the steeper routes toward Moni Panachrantou or Achla Beach, cost roughly EUR 15–30 per day, with premium e-bikes and full-suspension mountain bikes reaching EUR 20–35 at the peak of summer.

  • Cheapest: November–March, off season.
  • Moderate: April–June and September–October, shoulder pricing.
  • Priciest: July–August, high season.

When to book a rental bike in Andros?

High season runs July through August, when prices peak and the best bikes go quickly, so booking a few days ahead is wise. Low season, November to March, brings the cheapest rates but also the coolest, wetter weather. For the best combination of good prices and pleasant riding conditions, aim for May–June or September–October.

Local traffic rules in Andros

Greece drives on the right, and while cycling helmet rules for adults aren't strictly defined, wearing one is always the safer choice on Andros' narrow, occasionally gravel-strewn roads. Speed limits on the island's open roads reach up to 90 km/h for motor vehicles, though as a cyclist you'll naturally move at your own pace. If you're mixing in a car or scooter for parts of your trip, keep in mind the blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, tightened to 0.2 g/l for motorcyclists and new drivers.
