Wake up in Serres and you'll find a compact, unhurried town wrapped around Byzantine walls, with the vast, birdlife-rich shoreline of Lake Kerkini just a short ride away. Renting a bicycle here means you can drift along the lake's flat shore roads past grazing water buffalo, stop for coffee in Lithotopos, and still be back in town for dinner — a rhythm of travel a car or a bus tour simply can't match.
This is flat-to-gently-rolling country, and that's exactly why a bicycle is the right tool here. Traffic in the old town is light, distances between the main sights are short, and the roads out toward the Strymonas plain and the lake are level enough that you barely notice you're pedalling. A car feels like overkill for hopping between villages, and on foot you'd never reach the lake at all — a bike hits the sweet spot for both the town centre and the countryside around it.
No licence is needed to rent a bicycle, and there's no minimum age to speak of — this is the simplest vehicle on our site to book. Most operators ask for a small deposit, and no international driving permit is required since a bicycle isn't a motor vehicle in the first place.
Expect to pay around EUR 3–5 per day in low season, rising to roughly EUR 6–10 per day in high season. If you want an e-bike or a higher-spec touring or mountain bike, budget EUR 10–15 per day.
High season runs July to August, with the best prices and widest choice found instead in the shoulder months of May–June and September–October, when the weather is mild and the lake at its most pleasant for riding. Low season, November through February, brings the cheapest rates but also colder, wetter conditions less suited to a day in the saddle. Booking a few days ahead in summer is a good idea, since the most popular bikes go quickly.
Greece drives on the right, and while bicycles don't require a licence, it's still worth knowing the rules that apply to the roads you'll share with other traffic. Built-up areas carry a 50 km/h speed limit and open roads 90 km/h, so even quiet country lanes can see faster-moving cars and scooters passing you. The blood-alcohol limit for drivers is 0.5 g/l, dropping to 0.2 g/l for novice and professional drivers, so anyone you meet on the road should be sober behind the wheel. Riding a bicycle is refreshingly simple compared to motorised rentals here: no helmet law, no licence check, just you, the lake, and the open road.
