Picture a morning where the loudest thing on the island is a rooster: that is Agathonisi. Wheel a bicycle off the boat at Megalo Chorio, and within minutes you can be pedaling a quiet lane toward Spilia Beach for a swim, or climbing gently up to Mikro Chorio, where the whole bay opens up beneath you. There is no rush here — just tavernas, empty coves, and roads that seem built for two wheels rather than four.
At under 15 square kilometres, with barely any cars and only a handful of paved and dirt roads, Agathonisi simply isn't built for engines. A bicycle lets you cover the whole island in a day, take the loose gravel tracks a scooter would avoid, and stop wherever a view or a swim spot catches your eye. The climb toward Mikro Chorio and the ride out to the far beaches take a bit of effort, but nothing beyond an easy day trip from the port.
The good news: no licence, no minimum age, and no IDP required to rent a bicycle in Agathonisi. Some operators may ask for a small deposit or hold your ID while you ride, but that's about the extent of the paperwork — just grab a bike and go.
Expect to pay around 3–5 EUR per day in low season, rising to roughly 7–10 EUR per day in high season. A premium or newer model runs closer to 10–15 EUR per day.
High season runs July to August, when demand and prices both peak on this tiny island. Low season stretches November through March, but many small operators simply close for the winter, so don't count on finding a bike then. May, June, September and October offer the best balance — mild weather, fewer visitors, and easier availability.
Greece drives on the right, though on an island this quiet you'll barely meet another vehicle. Cyclists aren't required to wear a helmet, but it's sensible on the steeper, gravel-strewn stretches near Mikro Chorio and the outlying beaches. There's no real speed limit to worry about on these lanes, and since you're on a bicycle, alcohol limits that apply to scooters and cars simply don't come into play. Just keep an eye out for loose surfaces on the dirt tracks leading to Tholos Beach and the cave.
