Picture arriving by boat to a harbor with maybe a dozen fishing caiques and a couple of tavernas, and realizing this is it — this is the whole island. Agathonisi rewards exactly that kind of traveller. Pick up a quad at Agios Georgios and within minutes you're climbing dirt tracks toward Megalo Chorio, the island's whitewashed capital, or bumping down to a cove like Spilia where the water is glass-calm and you might be the only one there. There's no bus here, no taxi rank, nothing but you, the engine, and roads that go wherever curiosity takes you.
With barely a few square kilometers of land and under 200 residents, Agathonisi has no traffic in any real sense — but it also has no public transport at all, and most of its connecting roads are unpaved and unlit. That combination is exactly where a quad earns its keep: sturdy enough for the loose gravel and steep hill tracks that a scooter would struggle on, yet nimble enough to make a full loop of the island in a couple of hours. If you want to reach the beaches and viewpoints tourists on foot never see, this is how you do it.
You'll need a valid driving licence, though the exact category depends on how the quad is registered — light quadricycle or full quadricycle — so it's worth confirming with the rental company before booking. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental companies typically hold a deposit, usually as a card hold, and often set their own minimum age above the legal baseline, so check this when you book.
Expect to pay around 15–20 EUR per day in low season, rising to roughly 30–40 EUR in high season, with premium models running 40–50 EUR per day.
High season runs July to August, with the highest prices and least availability. Low season stretches from November to March, when many island rental shops close altogether. The sweet spot is May–June and September–October: warm enough to enjoy the beaches, cool enough to actually wear a helmet comfortably, and priced well below the summer peak.
Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for both rider and passenger, with real fines for skipping one. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, though on an island this size you'll rarely approach either. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but a stricter 0.2 g/l applies to novice riders. Keep in mind that rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and dirt tracks — which covers most of Agathonisi's routes to its best beaches — so ride carefully and know what you're covered for before heading off the main lanes.
