Donousa isn't an island you drive across — it's one you climb, dip, and wind through, on tracks too narrow and too steep for anything but two wheels or four. Pick up a quad in Stavros, the harbor village where every route on the island begins and ends, and within twenty minutes you can be parked above Kedros Beach, looking down at a crescent of gold sand and water so clear you can count the pebbles from the ridge. Nobody walks here for a beach day. They ride.

At just 13.5 square kilometres, Donousa has no real roads to speak of — mostly dirt tracks and narrow lanes linking Stavros to a scatter of hillside hamlets and beaches no bus will ever reach. There are no rental cars on the island, and none of the coves worth seeing are walkable in under an hour. A quad bike rental in Donousa is simply how you get around: steep enough to need real ground clearance, short enough that you can cover the whole island in a day, and remote enough that having your own wheels is the difference between seeing three beaches and seeing ten.

Top 10 things to see in Donousa by quad bike

  1. Kedros Beach — the island's signature crescent of golden sand and clear water, a short ride south of Stavros and the classic first stop.
  2. Stavros (Chora) — the harbor village and natural starting point for any route, with tavernas and a beach right at the port.
  3. Mersini — a hillside hamlet reached by a scenic inland road, worth a coffee stop for the views back over the coast.
  4. Kalotaritissa — a tiny fishing hamlet at the island's western end and the trailhead for the walk down to Fokospilia.
  5. Livadi Beach — a quieter sandy bay near Stavros, an easy detour most riders don't bother with.
  6. Fikio Beach — remote and undeveloped, reached mostly by dirt track, for anyone chasing the island's wilder side.
  7. Aspri Poulia Beach — isolated and nearly always empty, tucked along the northern coast.
  8. Charavgi — a small inland hamlet linked by old footpaths, a good pause while touring the interior.
  9. Fokospilia (Seal Cave) — a sea cave near Kalotaritissa once used by Mediterranean monk seals, reached along the coastal path.
  10. Vathi Limenari Beach — a far-flung cove on the island's quieter side, best left to confident riders.

What do you need to rent a quad bike in Donousa?

You'll need a valid driving licence — the exact category depends on how the quad is registered, so it's worth confirming with the operator when you book. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Most rental companies set their own minimum age, generally 18 and up, and will ask for a deposit, usually held on a credit card. Keep your licence, IDP and rental papers with you whenever you're riding, since checks do happen even on a small island like this.

How much does it cost to rent a quad bike in Donousa?

Expect to pay 15–20 EUR per day in low season, rising to 25–35 EUR per day in high season, with premium models running 35–45 EUR per day.

  • Prices climb steadily from spring into summer and peak in July and August.
  • May, June, September and October offer the best balance of good weather and lower rates.
  • Booking ahead matters most in high season, when the island's small fleet sells out fast.

When to book a rental quad bike in Donousa?

High season runs July through August, when prices peak and quads can be hard to find at short notice — book a few weeks ahead if you're travelling then. Low season stretches roughly November to March, when many island rental shops close altogether. The sweet spot is May–June or September–October: fewer crowds, easier weather for wearing a helmet all day, and noticeably better rates.

Local traffic rules in Donousa

Greece drives on the right, and helmets are compulsory for every rider and passenger — enforcement is strict and fines aren't small. Speed limits top out at 50 km/h in built-up areas, though on Donousa's tracks you'll rarely get close to that. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l generally, but drops to 0.2 g/l for novice riders in their first two years, so it's simplest to skip alcohol entirely before riding. One more thing worth knowing: rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and beaches, which covers most of Donousa's terrain, so ride within your comfort zone and ask your operator exactly what's covered before you head off toward Fikio or Vathi Limenari.
