Aegina Town greets ferry passengers with a compact harbor and a neoclassical waterfront, but the island's real character is inland and along the coast roads, far past where most day-trippers ever wander. Pick up a quad and you can be climbing the pine-covered hill to the Temple of Aphaia within the hour, then dropping down to the fishing village of Perdika for a late lunch with a view across the water to the Moni islet. In between, the ruined chapels of Palaiochora sit quietly on their hilltop, seen by a fraction of the visitors who make it to the temple.
Aegina measures only about 85 km², but its best sights are split between the coast and the hills, connected by a patchwork of smooth tarmac and rougher inland tracks that buses simply don't reach. A quad handles both without complaint, so you're not stuck choosing between the beach road to Agia Marina and the steeper approach to Palaiochora. That flexibility, plus the ease of parking right outside a taverna or a chapel gate, makes a quad-bike rental in Aegina Town the practical way to see the whole island in a single day.
You'll need a valid driving licence, though the exact category depends on how the quad is registered — light quadricycle or standard quadricycle — so it's worth confirming with the rental company when you book. Non-EU visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Rental companies typically ask for a minimum age and hold a deposit, usually as a credit-card authorization, with the amount varying by operator and model.
Expect to pay between 15 and 20 EUR per day in low season, rising to 25-35 EUR per day in high season, and 35-45 EUR per day for a premium model.
July and August are high season, when prices peak and popular models sell out early, so book ahead if you're travelling then. November to March is low season, with the cheapest rates but many shops closed for the winter. April, May, September and October sit comfortably in between, offering good weather, lighter traffic and prices well below the summer peak — arguably the best time to ride.
Greece drives on the right. Helmets are compulsory for every rider, and enforcement is strict with substantial fines for skipping one. Speed limits are 50 km/h in built-up areas and 90 km/h on open roads, though island roads are often narrow and gravel-strewn, so keep well under the limit on bends. The blood-alcohol limit is 0.5 g/l for most drivers, but riders in their first two years on a licence face a stricter 0.2 g/l. Rental insurance almost always excludes unpaved roads and off-road use, so stick to tarmac to keep your cover valid, and carry your licence, IDP and rental papers with you at all times.
